Hangover Years

The horsepower party didn’t end because Detroit suddenly lost interest. Insurance rates climbed, emissions rules tightened, fuel prices became impossible to ignore and the whole industry had to start playing by a different set of rules.

That didn’t mean every interesting car disappeared. A few manufacturers kept squeezing performance out of what they had, while others tried new combinations of styling, engineering and outright stubbornness to keep buyers interested.

Bottom Line

The 1970s get remembered as the years when the good times ended, but that’s only half the story. Detroit was being forced to change, and some of the most interesting cars came from manufacturers trying to hang onto performance while the rules shifted underneath them.
