Drag Racing

Straight Lines, Short Clocks & Plenty of Ways to Lose

Drag racing is the simple idea of putting two cars on a straight piece of pavement and finding out which one gets to the other end first. Then racers added classes, indexes, dial-ins, nitromethane, altered wheelbases, superchargers and enough timing equipment to make the simple part last about ten minutes.

This is where we sort out both the racing and the machinery — from learning what the Christmas Tree is telling you to understanding why a Top Fuel dragster is nearly 25 feet long and a gasser looks like somebody forgot to lower the front end.

The strip is the common ground. What changes is the assignment: nitro cars manage violence, Pro Stock chases naturally aspirated precision, Super Stock works inside factory architecture and the older experimental classes show how quickly Detroit learned to bend its own definitions.

Bottom Line

Drag racing is one straight road with a remarkable number of different ways to travel it.

Understand the rules and the machinery quits looking strange. Mostly.
