Commando / Charger 273 4-Barrel
The 4-barrel 273 is where the little LA starts getting teeth. This isn’t the same thing as every 273 Commando. A normal 4-barrel 273 is a good performance engine. A D/Dart package is a much narrower, proof-heavy deal. Mix those together and suddenly every carburetor becomes a race option and every seller starts hearing cash registers in the exhaust note.
If the car, parts, and paper trail don’t line up, slow down. The 273 is already a neat engine without turning it into a drag-class fairy tale. The rare stuff deserves respect, but respect comes after evidence, not before it.

The 273 LA gets misunderstood because it started a family that later engines made famous. That makes people either dismiss it as too small to matter or pretend every 273 is a little 340 waiting for the right stickers. Neither shortcut helps. Upgrade Limitations
The Mopar 273 LA small-block is where the later small-block story starts, but it doesn’t get to borrow every later small-block fantasy. It’s not an A-series Poly, a soft little 318, a hidden 340, or a polite 360. The 273 is the early LA small-block with its own small bore, early hardware issues, and very real limits.
The 273 uses a 3.625-inch bore and 3.31-inch stroke. That small bore is the first hard stop. It limits valve size, airflow, piston choices, head choices, and how much cylinder head you can realistically use before the engine starts carrying parts it can’t feed. The 273 can be crisp, smooth, and fun, but it doesn’t have the bore area or displacement to hide a bad combination.
The first upgrade limitation is airflow versus bore size. Later LA heads, bigger valves, and aggressive camshaft choices may sound tempting, but the 273’s small bore can shroud valves and limit what the heads can actually do. A giant-port, big-valve, high-RPM plan can make the engine worse where it needs to work. The 273 likes sharp response, good velocity, sensible compression, and parts that fit its size.
Camshaft choice needs restraint. The 273 can feel lively when the cam, compression, carburetion, ignition, exhaust, converter or clutch, and rear gear match. Completeness matters. A correct, complete 273 with its early hardware, linkage, brackets, front dress, intake, exhaust pieces, and application trail can be worth preserving. A tired, stripped, overbored, or misidentified core can become expensive before it becomes useful. Small displacement doesn’t make machine work small.
Bottom line: the 273 is a good little Mopar when it’s treated like a good little Mopar. Preserve it when the car deserves the first LA small-block identity. Build it mild and sharp when light-car response matters. Don’t confuse it with a 318, don’t expect 340 manners, and don’t let rare-package claims outrun the paperwork.
