Intro
You don’t identify a transmission by the name somebody says with confidence. You identify it by the manufacturer group, transmission family, case style, pan shape, tag, casting, bellhousing pattern, tailhousing, output shaft, gearset, electronics, and application.
That’s what this section is for: hard transmission reference, not swap-meet folklore dressed up like drivetrain wisdom. TH400, C6, A833, Toploader, 700R4, 4L60E, TorqueFlite, and T-10 are starting points, not final answers.
Start with the manufacturer group, then narrow it down by transmission family and version. After that, confirm the physical evidence before ordering parts, planning a swap, or believing some seller’s story because he pointed at the pan with confidence.
Reality Check: A transmission that almost fits is not a successful installation. It is a delayed problem with fluid in it.

Ford, Mercury, and Lincoln used familiar transmission families across cars, trucks, and heavier applications, but case patterns, gearsets, tailhousings, input shafts, electronics, and duty ratings still need to be checked. A blue oval does not make the parts interchangeable.
Chevrolet, Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Cadillac, and GMC used many shared GM transmission families, but case pattern, bellhousing style, valve body behavior, converter setup, electronics, and internal version still matter. “Turbo 400” is a start, not a complete diagnosis.
Dodge, Plymouth, Chrysler, DeSoto, and Imperial shared the main Mopar transmission families, but case style, engine pattern, tailhousing, gearset, duty rating, and application still matter. The badge on the car is not the transmission ID tag.

Transmission specs are only useful when you know exactly what transmission you are looking at. Guessing by name, pan shape, or what some seller wrote in a listing is how people end up with parts that almost fit.
Start With the Manufacturer Group
That gets you into the right general area before you start comparing case shape, tags, pan style, side covers, bellhousing patterns, output shafts, and internal versions.
Find the Transmission Family
A TH350, TH400, 700R4, 4L60E, C4, C6, Toploader, AOD, A833, TorqueFlite, T-10, or AX-series unit is a family starting point, not the whole answer.
Confirm the Physical Evidence
Use pan shape, case casting, tags, stampings, bolt pattern, bellhousing style, side cover, tailhousing, shifter location, input shaft, output shaft, and electronic connectors where applicable.
Manual and Automatic Are Different Problems
Manual transmissions usually come down to case pattern, gear ratios, input shaft, clutch fitment, shifter location, synchronizer condition, and strength. Automatic transmissions add converter match, valve body behavior, governor setup, electronics, cooling needs, lockup behavior, and internal calibration.
Same Family Does Not Always Mean Same Transmission
A transmission family can have several versions. Light-duty, heavy-duty, truck, car, overdrive, non-overdrive, lockup, non-lockup, electronic, and non-electronic versions may all live under names that sound too close for comfort.
Gear Ratios Matter
First gear, overdrive ratio, rear axle ratio, tire size, vehicle weight, and engine powerband all work together. Get that wrong and the vehicle may launch poorly, cruise badly, shift at the wrong time, or feel lazy even with a good engine.
Case and Bellhousing Details Matter
Some transmissions use removable bellhousings. Some use integrated cases. Some share names while using different bolt patterns, starter locations, case lengths, output shafts, or tailhousings. If you do not check the case, you are not done identifying the transmission.
Electronics Changed the Game
Later transmissions may depend on electronic control, sensors, solenoids, lockup control, throttle position, vehicle speed, and computer strategy. Treating an electronic transmission like an old hydraulic automatic is how people create expensive paperweights with fluid in them.
Match the Drivetrain Around It
Engine bolt pattern, converter or clutch setup, crossmember location, driveshaft length, axle ratio, electronics, cooler capacity, shift linkage, and intended use all have to work together. A transmission that fits badly is not a successful installation. It is a delayed problem.
Identification Beats Guessing
Use the pan shape, case casting, tag, stampings, bolt pattern, side cover, tailhousing, shifter location, input shaft, output shaft, and electronic connector details before trusting what someone called it. The transmission does not care what the ad said.
