Ford Torque Specs
Ford torque specs follow the engine family, not just the blue oval on the valve cover.
Start with the actual engine family. Y-block, Windsor, Cleveland/335, FE, 385-series, MEL, Ford inline-six, and early Ford four-cylinder engines are not one big Ford bolt chart with different displacements.

Ford Small Block and Early V8 Torque Specs
Ford 335/Cleveland Family 351C, Boss 351, 351M, and 400 small block Ford V8
Cleveland and 335-series engines look close enough to other Ford small blocks to invite bad assumptions. They need their own torque page because the hardware and architecture are not Windsor rules with bigger ports.
Ford Big Block Torque Specs
Ford 385 Family 429 and 460 big block Ford V8
The later Ford big block family is not an FE and not an MEL. The 429 and 460 share the 385-series family, but stroke, application, and hardware still need the right torque values.
Ford MEL Family 383, 410, 430, and 462 Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln big block V8
The MEL family is its own Ford big-block branch, not an FE with a luxury-car name. Use the MEL page when the block, heads, deck, and hardware belong to the Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln design.

What’s Different
- Ford reused familiar names and displacements across different engine families. Same cubic inches does not mean same architecture, same bolts, or same torque behavior.
- Y-block, Windsor, Cleveland/335, FE, 385-series, and MEL engines are separate families. Do not use one page as a shortcut for another.
- Windsor and Cleveland engines get confused because people call both of them small blocks. That does not make their parts, heads, or torque specs interchangeable.
- FE, MEL, and 385-series engines are all Ford big blocks in casual conversation, but they are not the same engine family. Treating them like one chart is how bad work starts.
- Ford small inline six and Ford 240 / 300 big six engines are not one torque chart with different cubic inches. Use the right six-cylinder page.
- Model T and Model A / B four-cylinder engines are not one clean torque chart. Use the page that matches the actual early Ford engine.
- Older Ford engines may use fasteners, thread pitches, and hardware that do not match later habits. Check the bolt before trusting the torque wrench.
- Ford swaps are common. The torque spec follows the engine family and the part with the threads, not the badge on the car or the name someone used in a classified ad.
- Dirty threads, wrong bolt length, damaged holes, mixed hardware, and bottomed fasteners can make a torque reading lie.
- Most Ford torque mistakes start with the same lazy thought: “It’s just a Ford.” No, it isn’t.
