Intro
The Y-block is not a Windsor, not an FE, and not some generic old Ford V8 that takes whatever number somebody remembers from a different engine.
These engines are simple enough to work on, but old enough to punish lazy assumptions. Wrong bolt length, bad head-bolt placement, and the old main-cap torque mistake can turn a normal rebuild into cracked iron and gasket trouble.

1 Early/smaller Y-block main-cap territory where the lower factory value applies.
2 292 and 312 main-cap hardware where the higher factory value applies. Do not use the old 120 lb-ft number unless cracked iron is on your wish list.
Aftermarket bolts, studs, rods, and aluminum heads use the part maker’s number and lube instructions. Don’t use this chart to overrule the parts in your hand.
A range is not a game of horseshoes. If a matched set shows 65-75, don’t give one bolt 65, the next one 71, and the last one whatever your elbow liked. Pick one value in the range and use it consistently across the set unless the real procedure says certain bolts get different numbers.

Notes
- Y-block head bolts are not all the same length. The two longer top bolts go on the ends. Mix them up and you are not rebuilding an engine; you are setting a trap.
- 312 main caps are taller than 292 caps. The 312 uses different-length main-cap bolts, with the shorter bolts at the rear cap.
- The end intake manifold bolt holes open into the pushrod holes. Bolts that are too long can interfere with the pushrods.
- The rocker shaft oil holes face down toward the cylinder head. Upside down rocker shafts are how the top end gets starved while the owner blames oil pressure.

Common Mistakes
- Using the old 120 lb-ft main-cap number because some manual printed it and nobody questioned it.
- Mixing Y-block head bolts by length and then wondering why the gasket will not stay sealed.
- Putting 312 main-cap bolts in the wrong location and acting surprised when old iron complains.
- Using intake bolts that are too long and shoving them into pushrod territory.
- Installing rocker shafts with the oil holes wrong and starving the rocker gear.
- Reading 65-75 on head bolts and scattering random values across the set like that was the plan.

Bottom Line
The Y-block is old Ford iron, not mystery magic.
It will tolerate plenty, but it will not forgive wrong bolts in the wrong holes.
Use the sane main-cap number, keep the matched sets consistent, and do not let one bad old spec do the damage for you.
