A loose mystery MEL missing expensive pieces is another. The 462’s rarity doesn’t automatically make it valuable; sometimes rare just means the replacement parts are hiding from you on purpose.

The 462 MEL deserves respect as the big-displacement closing chapter of a strange Lincoln engine family. It’s smooth, heavy, uncommon, and worth preserving when the car and evidence line up. The 462 MEL gets misunderstood because it has the biggest number in the family and sits right next to the better-known 460 in Ford history. That makes people either overrate it as the ultimate MEL performance piece or dismiss it as an obsolete lump. Both shortcuts are lazy, and both can cost money.

  • “The 462 is just a 430 bored and stroked.”
    No. It’s related, but it needs to be identified and built as a 462, not treated like a casual 430 upgrade. The bore, stroke, production years, application, parts needs, and value context are different.

    That matters because MEL parts mistakes aren’t cute. A wrong assumption can turn into wrong pistons, wrong expectations, wrong pricing, and a rebuild plan that starts limping before the block is cleaned.
  • “The 462 is basically a Ford 460.”

When It Actually Makes Sense

Compatibility Notes

Family identification.
The 462 belongs to the MEL family: Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln. It’s not an FE, not a Windsor, and not a 385-series 429 or 460. MEL was its own passenger-car/luxury-car engine family, with its own architecture, fitment, parts logic, and machine-work requirements.

Lincoln Continental application.
The 462 is a late-MEL Lincoln Continental engine used from 1966 through 1968 before the 460 replaced it. Treat that narrow application window as important. Verify the exact year, model, engine code, casting information, induction, accessory drive, and transmission package before calling anything compatible.

Bore and stroke.
The 462 MEL uses a 4.38-inch bore and 3.83-inch stroke. That separates it from the 430 MEL at 4.30 x 3.70, the 410 MEL at 4.20 x 3.70, and the 383 MEL at 4.30 x 3.30. Same family doesn’t mean same rotating assembly, piston plan, compression setup, gasket needs, or restoration identity.
