Intro

The FE is where Ford big-block guessing gets expensive fast.

A 390 grocery-getter, a 406, a 427 side-oiler, and a 428 are all FE family, but they are not all the same pile of bolts. Crossbolts, rod hardware, head-bolt values, and performance-engine details matter before the wrench ever clicks.

Aftermarket bolts, studs, rods, and aluminum heads use the part maker’s number and lube instructions. Don’t use this chart to overrule the parts in your hand.

A range is not a game of horseshoes. If a matched set shows 95-105, don’t give one bolt 95, the next one 101, and the last one whatever your elbow liked. Pick one value in the range and use it consistently across the set unless the real procedure says certain bolts get different numbers.

Notes

  • FE does not mean every FE uses the same fastener value. The 406 and 427 get special attention for crossbolts, rod hardware, and head-bolt values.
  • 427 head-bolt torque can differ from the standard FE value. Do not use the 390 number on a 427 just because both engines wear FE clothes.
  • Crossbolted main caps are not decoration. If the block has them, torque them. If it does not, do not invent hardware the block never had.
  • FE intake manifolds are heavy and gasket-sensitive. Follow the torque pattern or you’re asking for leaks.

Common Mistakes

  • Using one generic FE number on every 332-through-428 engine and pretending the family name did the homework.
  • Forgetting the 406 / 427 rod-bolt split and using the lower standard FE number where the higher value belongs.
  • Missing the 427 head-bolt split because “big-block Ford” sounded specific enough.
  • Ignoring crossbolts on a block that has them, or talking about crossbolts on a block that does not.
  • Reading a range and scattering random values across head bolts, mains, rods, or intake bolts like that was ever a plan.

Bottom Line

The FE family is not one engine with nine nicknames.

Standard FE, 406, 427, and 428 details can change what the wrench should do.

Check the actual FE in front of you, respect the real splits, use one value across matched fasteners, and do not let “big-block Ford” do your thinking.
