Intro

The Slant Six is simple, durable, and famous for surviving abuse. That does not make every bolt on it a lug nut.

The 170, 198, and 225 share the same basic leaned-over six-cylinder family, but the engine is full of small fasteners, thin covers, manifold hardware, and inch-pound rows that punish lazy torque-wrench habits. The Slant Six may run forever, but that is not an invitation to tighten everything until your wrist feels proud.

1 Standard and heavy-duty rod hardware do not use the same value. Match the actual rod bolts instead of guessing from displacement.

2 These are inch-pound rows. Do not “convert by confidence” and twist thin covers, pans, or carb flanges into junk.

3 The intake-to-exhaust joint is part of the Slant Six manifold circus. Tighten it evenly and follow the actual manifold setup.

4 Common Mopar working value where matching factory-style hardware is used. Swaps, adapters, replacement starters, and non-stock driveline hardware follow the part maker.


Aftermarket bolts, studs, rods, manifolds, carburetors, replacement fasteners, transmission adapters, and modified Slant Six hardware use the part maker’s number and lube instructions. Don’t use this chart to overrule the parts in your hand.

A range is not a game of horseshoes. If a matched set shows 50-55, don’t give one rod nut 50, the next one 53, and the last one whatever your elbow liked. Pick one value in the range and use it consistently across the set unless the real procedure says certain fasteners get different numbers.

Notes

  • The Slant Six has a lot of inch-pound hardware. Read the unit before you pull the wrench. 200 in-lb is not 200 lb-ft, unless your plan is to turn a simple job into scrap.
  • The intake and exhaust manifold area is where lazy tightening starts vacuum leaks, exhaust leaks, and stupid troubleshooting.
  • Rod hardware matters. Standard and heavy-duty rod nuts have different values, and “it came out of a Slant Six” is not enough information.
  • Thin covers, oil pans, and carburetor flanges do not seal better because you crushed them flatter. They leak better.
  • Swapped transmissions, adapters, headers, aftermarket intakes, and replacement carburetors follow the parts in your hand, not the memory of a stock four-door Dart.

Common Mistakes

  • Using V8 Mopar torque habits on a Slant Six because both engines came from Chrysler.
  • Reading inch-pounds as foot-pounds and then acting shocked when the little bolts lose the argument.
  • Treating the intake and exhaust manifold assembly like one ordinary manifold job instead of the Slant Six heat-and-clamp headache it is.
  • Using the standard rod-nut value on heavy-duty rod hardware, or the heavy-duty value on standard rods, because checking was apparently too much work.
  • Cranking valve-cover, oil-pan, carburetor, or front-cover hardware down like the gasket owes you rent.
  • Using adapter, header, intake, carburetor, or transmission-swap hardware with factory-style numbers after the parts came with their own instructions.

Bottom Line

The Slant Six earned its reputation by surviving things it should not have had to survive.

That does not make bad torque work smart.

Use the Slant Six numbers, read the units, respect the manifold hardware, check the rod fasteners, keep matched fasteners consistent, and don’t let “it’ll run anyway” do your thinking.
