Intro

The Ford C4 earned its place because it gave small-block Fords a compact automatic that didn’t drag half a dump truck under the floor. It was light, simple, useful, and just enough transmission for a lot of Mustangs, Cougars, Mavericks, early Broncos, small Ford street cars, and light-duty swaps that didn’t need the big bruiser.

Introduced for the 1964 model year, the C4 became Ford’s familiar light-to-medium-duty 3-speed automatic. It showed up behind six-cylinder engines, small V8s, and plenty of Ford and Mercury hardware because it fit the job. That wide use is part of the appeal. It’s also why the parts pile can turn stupid in a hurry.

The C4’s attraction isn’t mystery. No overdrive. No electronic controller. No normal lockup converter. Just an old hydraulic automatic built for compact packaging and normal street work. In the right car, that simplicity is exactly the point.

The trap is assuming every C4 is the same C4. Ford changed enough around the case, bellhousing, input, converter, flexplate, linkage, and output to make lazy identification expensive. A C4 can be the right answer behind a mild small-block Ford, but the name on the case only starts the argument. The actual unit has to finish it.

Use the C4 where a compact, non-overdrive 3-speed automatic makes sense. It’s a good transmission when the car is asking the right question. It’s a bad gamble when the buyer only hears “C4,” stops checking, and starts spending.

Overview

The Ford C4 is a longitudinal 3-speed automatic built around an aluminum bellhousing, main case, and tailhousing. That three-piece layout is part of its identity. Ford wanted a lighter, more compact automatic for smaller cars and small-block applications, and the C4 filled that space without needing the bulk of the heavier C6.

Mechanically, the C4 is old-school hydraulic automatic hardware. A torque converter couples the engine to the transmission. A front pump supplies pressure. The valve body directs that pressure. A governor reacts to road speed. A vacuum modulator reacts to engine load. Bands, clutches, servos, and planetary gears handle the actual ratio changes. Nothing here needs a computer to tell it what mood it’s in.

The normal C4 has three forward gears and no overdrive. Third gear is direct drive, so highway rpm still depends on axle ratio, tire height, converter behavior, and road speed. That doesn’t make the C4 bad. It means the car has to be geared like someone thought past the end of the driveway.

The C4’s best lane is mild to moderate small-block Ford street duty. A 260, 289, 302, or similar small Ford V8 in a reasonable-weight car is exactly the kind of work that made the C4 useful. Built versions can handle more, but that’s a parts, pressure, converter, cooling, and builder-quality discussion. It’s not a free pass for every tired core with a clean pan.

That’s the C4’s real character: compact hydraulic hardware with honest limits and good manners when the combination is matched. It doesn’t need to apologize for being simple. The owner just needs to stop pretending simple means interchangeable, indestructible, or highway-friendly by accident.

Differences

The C4 is different because it gave Ford a compact automatic for cars that didn’t need the biggest transmission in the catalog. It belongs in the small-block Ford world first: Mustang, Cougar, Maverick, early Bronco, light-duty trucks, and street cars where size, weight, and simplicity are part of the plan. Judge it there, and it makes sense. Drag it into heavier work without a plan, and the shine comes off quick.

Compared with earlier Ford-O-Matic hardware, the C4 is the cleaner small-block-era answer. The older automatics belong to a different period of Ford design, with different behavior, parts support, and identification headaches. If the goal is a normal classic small-block Ford automatic, the C4 is usually the familiar reference point. The older stuff can be interesting, but interesting isn’t the same thing as easy to live with.

Compared with the Ford C6, the C4 trades brute strength for size, weight, and packaging. That can be exactly right in a small-block Mustang, Cougar, Maverick, early Bronco, or light street build. The C6 earns its keep when torque, vehicle weight, towing, big tires, or repeated abuse matter more than tunnel room and rotating mass. Using the C6 where a C4 fits the job doesn’t automatically make the build smarter. Sometimes it just makes the car heavier, tighter, and uglier.

Compared with the AOD, Ford’s later Automatic Overdrive, the C4 trades highway comfort for simplicity. The AOD brings overdrive, more swap complexity, and its own adjustment concerns. The C4 stays simpler, but third gear is still direct drive. If the real complaint is cruise rpm, a standard C4 won’t solve it by being old, familiar, or cheap. Rear gear, tire diameter, converter behavior, and transmission choice still have to agree.

Compared with the C5, the C4 is the earlier non-lockup baseline. The C5 grew out of the same general architecture, but it brought lockup-converter hardware and related hydraulic changes for later fuel-economy needs. That makes it related and worth understanding, not just a C4 with a different name tag. Treating the two like twins is how parts orders learn bad words.

The C4’s advantage is honest: compact size, low weight, simple hydraulic control, and enough transmission for the right small-block Ford. Its limit is honest too. It’s not the heavy-duty Ford answer, not the overdrive answer, and not a magic swap coupon. Pick the C4 when that job fits. Pick a different Ford automatic when the job has changed.

C4 specs are clean only when the exact unit is identified. Case-fill vs pan-fill, early vs later input shaft, bellhousing, converter, flexplate, engine balance, output spline, yoke, and tailhousing can all change the parts order.

Transmission Core

The C4 is a hydraulic automatic, not a computer-controlled mystery box. Pressure, road speed, engine load, linkage, converter behavior, cooling, and internal condition decide what it does. When those pieces agree, the transmission acts like it has manners. When they don’t, the car starts shifting like it learned from a drunk uncle.

The torque converter is the first piece in the chain. It lets the engine idle while the car sits still, couples engine torque into the transmission, and affects how the car leaves, shifts, and feels under load. Converter choice matters because a loose, tired, contaminated, or mismatched converter can make a decent C4 feel lazy, hot, or sloppy before anyone even opens the case.

The front pump is the pressure source. It feeds the hydraulic system that applies clutches and bands, moves servos, and lets the valve body do its work. Weak pressure, leaks, worn pump parts, poor sealing, dirty passages, or sloppy rebuild clearances can make the C4 slip, flare, drag, or burn parts without needing anything dramatic to break in half.

The valve body is the traffic cop. It routes pressure to the right circuits at the right time. The governor reacts to output speed. The vacuum modulator reacts to engine load. Throttle movement and kickdown linkage add another layer of request. Road speed, load, throttle, and pressure all have to agree before the transmission knows when to shift and how firmly to apply the next gear.

Inside the case, bands, clutches, servos, and planetary gears do the real gear-changing work. The planetary gearset provides the ratios. Clutches and bands hold or release the right members. Servos apply bands with hydraulic force. When the friction parts are fresh, the pressure is right, and the clearances are sane, the C4 feels clean and predictable. When the frictions are cooked, bands are loose, servos leak, or clearances are sloppy, the transmission starts teaching expensive lessons.

Third gear is direct drive. There’s no overdrive hiding in the case and no normal lockup converter waiting to calm highway rpm. Once the C4 is in high gear, axle ratio, tire height, road speed, converter behavior, and heat control decide how happy the car feels. That’s not a flaw. That’s the deal.

Heat is part of the core story because automatics live and die by fluid condition. The C4 needs clean fluid, proper level, good cooler flow, sound cooler lines, and a converter that’s not turning every mile into a heat-making argument. Burnt fluid, blocked cooler passages, contaminated lines, or a converter full of old failure trash can ruin a fresh build before the owner finishes bragging about it.

The kickdown setup deserves special attention because Ford didn’t make every C4 installation look the same under the hood. Rods, cable-style arrangements, brackets, carb linkage, throttle travel, and return geometry all need to agree. If the kickdown is missing, wrong, or misadjusted, the car may refuse to downshift when the driver asks for power. That doesn’t automatically make the transmission junk. The C4’s 2.46 first gear is normal street-automatic territory. It gives a light or midweight small-block Ford enough help leaving a stop without pretending the transmission was built to drag tree stumps. With the right converter and rear gear, it feels useful instead of dramatic. That’s the whole idea.

Second gear at 1.46:1 is the bridge between launch help and direct drive. It’s not a close-ratio racing miracle, and it’s not supposed to be. It keeps the car moving through the range like an old 3-speed automatic should, but the surrounding combination still decides whether that shift feels useful, lazy, or like the engine went looking for a chair.

Third gear is 1.00:1 direct drive. There’s no overdrive. No hidden highway gear. No secret fourth waiting behind the pan. If the car has steep rear gears, short tires, and regular highway duty, the C4 won’t grow another gear out of sympathy. The axle and tire math still gets paid.

Reverse is 2.18:1. That matters because the ratio table and general specs have to agree before the page starts acting like a spec sheet. A wrong reverse number usually won’t ruin a swap, but it will make the spec page look careless.

The ratios aren’t bad. They’re honest old-school 3-speed automatic ratios. A mild Mustang or Cougar with sane rear gear and tire size can feel right at home. A heavier vehicle with short tires, steep gears, loose converter behavior, and highway miles can make the same numbers feel like punishment with ATF in it.

Variants

The C4 variant story doesn’t need to become a junkyard soap opera, but it does need enough detail to keep the wrong parts from following you home. Early parts, later parts, case-fill, pan-fill, bellhousing packages, input shafts, and the related C5 give a careless buyer plenty of rope.

Early C4

Early C4 units aren’t bad, but they aren’t the same parts-order starting point as later units. Early input-shaft, stator-support, valve-body, and converter details can change what fits and what doesn’t. That matters when the transmission is apart, when the converter is being ordered, and when somebody assumes “C4” is a complete sentence.

An early C4 can work fine in the right mild car. The mistake is treating it like every later C4 part will fall into place because the pan shape looks familiar. Ford didn’t build these things for future internet shopping carts. Count, compare, and confirm before the wrong shiny part shows up.

Later C4

Later C4 units are usually the friendlier starting point for a normal small-block Ford street build. Parts support tends to be better, converter choices are usually easier, and the later internal setup is what many builders expect when they talk about a common performance C4.

That still doesn’t make “later” a magic word. Case-fill, pan-fill, bellhousing, converter, flexplate, tailhousing, output, and original use still matter. A later C4 can be the better starting point and still be the wrong unit for the car. Better odds aren’t the same thing as correct parts.

Case-Fill C4

A case-fill C4 puts the dipstick tube into the transmission case. That one clue tells you more than where the fluid goes. It points toward the case style, bellhousing arrangement, and the kind of parts path you are probably walking.

Case-fill units are common in passenger-car C4 use and are often friendlier in tight car installations. That doesn’t make them universal. The bellhousing, converter, flexplate, input shaft, and linkage still have to belong together. The dipstick tube may be the first clue, but it’s not the whole confession.

Pan-Fill C4

A pan-fill C4 puts the dipstick tube into the pan and uses a different case and bellhousing arrangement. These units often show up in heavier-duty or truck-style Ford use, and they can be useful when that’s the job. They aren’t just case-fill C4s with the tube moved for decoration.

The pan-fill setup can affect bellhousing fit, cooler-line routing, header clearance, crossmember room, and parts ordering. If the car is tight under the floor or around the exhaust, this is where a “good deal” starts acting like it brought friends.

Bellhousing, Flexplate, and Converter Packages

The C4’s removable bellhousing is useful, but it’s also where people get brave and dumb. Bellhousing size, flexplate tooth count, starter position, engine balance, and converter pattern all have to agree. Close doesn’t count. The starter either meshes correctly or it doesn’t. The converter either matches the flexplate and input setup or it becomes expensive sculpture.

This is especially important with small-block Ford swaps because engine balance and flexplate choices changed over the years. A C4 may bolt near the engine and still be wrong in the details that make the car shake, grind, leak, or refuse to act civilized.

C5 Related / Confusable Unit

The C5 is related to the C4, but it’s not just a C4 wearing a newer hat. It grew out of the same general family and brought lockup-converter hardware and related hydraulic changes for early 1980s fuel-economy work.

Some C5 pieces can be useful in performance C4 builds, but that doesn’t turn every C5 into a direct C4 substitute. Treat the C5 as related, useful to recognize, and easy to confuse. Don’t treat it like a regular C4 until the converter, lockup hardware, case, bellhousing, and internal plan have all been sorted out.

The variant rule is simple: the difference that looks small on the floor can become the part that stops the whole job. A C4 doesn’t have to be rare or exotic to be wrong.

Notes

The C4 is common, but common doesn’t mean correct. Ford made enough versions and surrounding parts to make “I found a C4” the beginning of the job, not the end of it.

The normal C4 ratio set is 2.46 first, 1.46 second, 1.00 direct third, and 2.18 reverse. There’s no overdrive hiding in the case. If highway rpm is the complaint, rear gear, tire size, converter behavior, or a different transmission has to solve it.

Case-fill and pan-fill aren’t dipstick trivia. That tube location can steer the case, bellhousing, clearance, and parts plan. Ignore it and the transmission will explain the difference after the money is gone.

The output and back half still get a vote. A 28-spline output is common, but the actual output shaft, yoke, tailhousing, mount position, speedometer drive, and driveshaft length still have to match the car. A C4 can be correct up front and still wrong out back.

Fluid, pressure, band adjustment, and cooling matter. Type F is the normal classic C4 service baseline, but builder instructions and friction-material choices still matter. Old fluid, weak pressure, lazy band adjustment, poor cooler flow, and mystery rebuild work can make a good design act like junk.

The C5 is related, not identical. Lockup-converter hardware and related hydraulic changes make it worth recognizing before parts are ordered. Treating every C5 clue like a plain C4 answer is how the parts pile starts learning new swear words.

Identification

A C4 shouldn’t be identified by seller confidence, fresh paint, or the sacred phrase “came out of a Mustang.” Start with visible clues, then keep checking until the clues agree. One clue gets you close. Several matching clues keep you from buying yard art.

Start with the pan. A C4 uses an 11-bolt pan that’s close to square compared with the larger C6 pan. That’s a useful first clue when separating C4 and C6 units. It doesn’t prove year, fill style, input shaft, bellhousing, converter, output, or original use. The pan starts the conversation. It doesn’t get to win the argument by itself.

Next, find the fill location. A case-fill C4 has the dipstick tube entering the transmission case. A pan-fill C4 has the dipstick tube entering the pan. That one check helps separate two major C4 paths before money starts moving. Ignore it and the transmission may fit like a plan or fight like a drunk mule. Guess which one costs more.

Then look at the bellhousing and flexplate package. The removable bellhousing is useful, but it has to match the engine, flexplate tooth count, starter position, converter pattern, and balance requirement. Almost right here is still wrong. The starter doesn’t care how confident the seller sounded.

Input shaft details come next. Early and later C4 units don’t all share the same input-shaft and stator-support setup. Converter selection and internal parts choice depend on what is actually there, not what somebody thinks the year might have been. If the converter is coming off anyway, count and confirm before ordering parts like the catalog owes you mercy.

Tailhousing and output details finish the fitment check. A correct C4 can still have the wrong tailhousing length, mount position, yoke, speedometer drive, or driveshaft fit for the car. Correct family. Wrong back half. Still wrong.

Use the clues together: pan shape, fill location, bellhousing, flexplate, starter fit, input shaft, output, tailhousing, tags, casting numbers, and original-use clues. If the clues argue with each other, stop calling it identified. It’s only a rumor with a drain plug.

Compatibility Notes

The C4 fits a lot of small-block Ford work, but it doesn’t crawl under the car and solve the swap for you. Bellhousing, flexplate, fill style, linkage, input, output, and year differences can still turn a correct-looking C4 into the wrong answer.

Check these items before swapping or buying parts:

  • Bellhousing, Flexplate, Starter, and Balance
    This package has to agree before the swap has a chance. The bellhousing has to match the engine family and flexplate size. The starter has to mesh correctly. The converter pattern has to match the flexplate. The engine balance has to match the rotating assembly. Wrong tooth count grinds. Wrong imbalance shakes. Wrong converter fit makes the transmission wait until it’s under the car to ruin your mood.
  • Case-Fill or Pan-Fill Layout
    Case-fill and pan-fill C4s don’t just move the dipstick for entertainment. The fill style can affect bellhousing style, dipstick routing, exhaust clearance, header room, and parts ordering. If the tube lands in the wrong neighborhood, the installation can get ugly fast.
  • Converter and Input Shaft
    Early and later C4 input-shaft differences can change converter selection and internal parts compatibility. The converter has to match the input setup and flexplate pattern. Guess wrong and the problem may not show up until the transmission is already under the car, because of course that’s when stupidity likes to invoice you.
  • Tailhousing, Mount, and Driveshaft
    Tailhousing length and mount position affect crossmember location and driveshaft length. Correct transmission family. Wrong length. Still wrong. A C4 that places the mount wrong or changes driveshaft length isn’t “almost there.” It’s waiting for more parts.
  • Output Shaft and Yoke
    The yoke has to match the actual output shaft and driveshaft. Close enough isn’t a driveshaft measurement. Wrong yoke fit can create slip-yoke trouble, vibration, seal problems, or a driveshaft plan that starts sounding like a confession.
  • Kickdown / Throttle Linkage
    The linkage needs correct geometry, travel, and return behavior. If full-throttle downshift doesn’t work, the car may feel lazy even with a healthy transmission. If the linkage binds or never reaches the right travel, the C4 isn’t being stubborn. It’s being mismanaged.
  • Vacuum Modulator and Vacuum Source
    The modulator needs a proper vacuum source and a hose that isn’t cracked, kinked, or routed like an afterthought. Bad vacuum information doesn’t make the C4 mysterious. It makes the C4 believe a liar through a hose.
  • Cooler Lines and Cooling
    Cooler lines need to clear exhaust, steering, linkage, suspension movement, and anything else waiting to rub through a good day. Heat is how old automatics get turned into glitter storage. Bad routing and poor cooling can kill a good C4 without asking permission.
  • Shifter Linkage
    The shifter and transmission detents need to agree. If the lever says one thing and the transmission does another, that isn’t vintage charm. Park, reverse, neutral, drive, and low ranges need to land where the driver thinks they’re landing.
  • Speedometer Drive
    Speedometer gear selection needs to match axle ratio and tire size. Guessing here is how the speedometer becomes dashboard fiction. That may sound harmless until the owner starts judging gearing and highway rpm with a liar in the dash.

The C4 works best when the major pieces are part of the same plan. Mix parts by rumor and the car may still move, but it won’t owe you good manners.

Common Problems

Old C4 problems usually show up as slipping, flaring, delayed engagement, wrong shift timing, harsh shifts, leaks, heat damage, or no kickdown when the car needs one. The trick is figuring out whether the trouble is adjustment, pressure, wear, contamination, wrong parts, or a transmission that has already been cooked past polite conversation.

  • Worn Clutches and Bands
    Age, heat, weak pressure, hard use, dirty fluid, and lazy rebuilds can wear the holding parts inside the C4. Slipping, flaring, delayed engagement, and weak apply aren’t charming old-car personality traits. They’re evidence. Keep driving it that way and the transmission will stop offering hints and start demanding money.
  • Front Pump and Pressure Problems
    The C4 needs hydraulic pressure to apply clutches and bands with authority. A worn pump, pressure leak, bad sealing surface, loose clearances, or sloppy rebuild work can make the transmission feel weak even when the geartrain isn’t the first problem. Low pressure doesn’t always announce itself with a parade. Sometimes it just lets the clutches die quietly while the owner blames the wrong parts.
  • Vacuum Modulator Problems
    A bad modulator, wrong vacuum source, cracked hose, or stuck modulator valve can make shift timing and shift feel go stupid. The modulator helps the transmission read engine load. Feed it lies and the C4 will shift like it believes them.
  • Governor Problems
    The governor tells the C4 what output speed is doing. When it’s dirty, worn, stuck, or acting lazy, shift timing can wander all over the road. Late shifts, early shifts, missing upshifts, or shifts that don’t match vehicle speed put the governor on the suspect list. Small part. Big annoyance. Plenty of old automatics have embarrassed their owners with less.
  • Kickdown and Linkage Problems
    Missing, wrong, or misadjusted kickdown linkage can leave the C4 lazy when the throttle asks for a downshift. Ford used enough rods, brackets, and cable-style arrangements to make guessing dangerous. If full-throttle downshift is missing, don’t start by condemning the whole transmission like it insulted your family. Make sure the linkage is actually doing its job.
  • Leaks and Low Fluid
    Pan leaks, front seal leaks, rear seal leaks, cooler-line leaks, dipstick-tube leaks, and modulator-area leaks can all turn into low-fluid trouble. Low fluid can cause slipping, heat, clutch damage, and the kind of repair bill that makes “just a small leak” sound dumber in hindsight. ATF belongs inside the transmission, not decorating the driveway like modern art.
  • Heat Damage
    Heat cooks fluid, seals, clutches, and patience. Poor cooler flow, old lines, loose converter behavior, heavy use, low fluid, and bad routing near exhaust can turn a usable C4 into scrap with a pan gasket. Burnt fluid isn’t character. It’s the transmission handing you a signed confession.
  • Converter and Cooler Contamination
    When an automatic fails ugly, trash can travel through the converter, cooler, and lines. Rebuilding the transmission while feeding it old garbage isn’t a rebuild plan. It’s a parts rinse cycle.   • “All C4s are basically the same.”
    No. The pan may look familiar, but year changes, input shafts, case-fill and pan-fill layouts, bellhousings, converters, flexplates, valve bodies, and outputs can change the whole parts plan. “C4” is the family name, not a completed order form.
  • “A C4 is weak because it’s small.”
    Wrong. Stock C4s have limits, but small doesn’t automatically mean useless. A properly built C4 can live behind serious small-block power. The build, pressure, hard parts, converter, cooling, vehicle weight, tire, and abuse level decide the truth.
  • “A C4 is strong because racers use them.”
    Also wrong. Race-built C4s aren’t proof that every used C4 core is ready for abuse. That logic is how a junkyard transmission gets volunteered for a job it never applied for. The race car got parts. Your mystery core got hope.
  • “A C4 has overdrive.”
    It doesn’t. Third gear is direct drive. If the car needs lower cruise rpm, a standard C4 isn’t hiding the answer under the pan. Rear gear, tire size, converter behavior, or a different transmission has to solve that problem.
  • “A C5 is just a C4.”
    Related doesn’t mean identical. The C5 brought lockup-converter hardware and hydraulic differences. Treating it like a plain C4 can make the converter, wiring, hydraulics, and parts order turn ugly fast.
  • “If it bolts to the engine, it fits.”
    No. Bolting to the engine only means the first argument started well. The converter, flexplate, starter, linkage, mount, yoke, and shifter can still veto the whole swap. Some of them vote with a hammer.
  • “A clean C4 is a good C4.”
    Clean aluminum proves somebody cleaned aluminum. It doesn’t prove pump health, clutch condition, band adjustment, converter quality, pressure control, cooling history, or whether the inside smells like burnt regret.
  • “Rebuilt means good.”
    Rebuilt means someone had it apart. That’s all. Parts quality, clearances, cleanliness, pressure, valve-body work, converter choice, band adjustment, and builder competence decide whether the word is worth anything.

Most C4 myths come from treating a familiar name like a guarantee. The transmission still has to match the job, the parts still have to match each other, and the condition still has to prove itself.

Reality Check

The C4 isn’t a great transmission because it does everything. It’s a good transmission because it does one old Ford job honestly: compact 3-speed automatic work behind reasonable small-block power.

That’s also where people get into trouble. They see small, common, and cheap, then start pretending the C4 owes them overdrive manners, C6 abuse margin, race-transmission strength, and junkyard-swap forgiveness. It doesn’t. That was never the deal.

A good C4 can be a clean answer in a Mustang, Cougar, Maverick, early Bronco, light truck, or small-block Ford street car where compact size, simple hydraulics, and normal 3-speed behavior fit the job. It can also be the wrong answer in a heavy vehicle, hard-use build, towing setup, big-tire project, or highway cruiser that really needs more transmission.

The parts mix matters as much as the model name. Case-fill or pan-fill, early or later input, bellhousing, converter, flexplate, starter, balance, output, yoke, tailhousing, mount, linkage, and cooling all have to agree. A C4 can be correct by family and wrong by five details. That’s still wrong.

The condition matters too. A tired C4 with burnt fluid, weak pressure, worn clutches, loose bands, bad seals, lazy linkage, mystery converter, or contaminated cooler circuit isn’t a bargain because the case is familiar. It’s a rebuild candidate with a good name and a bill hiding in the pan.

The honest question is simple: does the car need compact, light, hydraulic, non-overdrive automatic hardware, or does it need something bigger, stronger, newer, or more highway-friendly? Answer that before the transmission is under the car and everybody starts acting surprised.

The Ford C4 belongs in the classic Ford transmission story because it gave small-block cars a compact, light, simple automatic that fit the job without dragging the big transmission into every build.

Judge it for what it is: a light-to-medium-duty, non-overdrive, hydraulic 3-speed automatic with good usefulness and plenty of variation traps. In the right small-block Ford street car, it can be exactly the right answer. In the wrong job, it becomes a lesson with a dipstick.

The right C4 isn’t just any C4. Case-fill or pan-fill, input shaft, converter, bellhousing, flexplate, starter, balance, output, yoke, tailhousing, linkage, cooler setup, and internal condition all have to match the car and the job.

Use the C4 where compact and simple are part of the plan. If the car needs overdrive, more torque margin, heavier-duty service, or long highway legs with relaxed rpm, admit it before the C4 teaches the lesson with your money.
