Overview

The Mopar RB 413 sits at the beginning of Chrysler’s raised-block wedge family. The low-deck B engines gave Chrysler a modern wedge big block starting in 1958, but the RB block stretched the idea upward. The raised deck allowed the longer 3.75-inch stroke that separated the 413 from the shorter-stroke B engines. That extra stroke gave Chrysler more displacement, more leverage, and the kind of low-speed authority big cars and early performance packages both wanted, even if they wanted it for different reasons.

The architecture explains the 413’s job. It used the same basic Chrysler wedge direction as the B engines, but the taller RB block gave it a different personality. Compared with a low-deck 383, the 413 brought more stroke and more torque. Compared with the later 426 wedge and 440, it was the earlier RB answer that proved the raised-block package could do more than haul expensive sheetmetal. In regular Chrysler and Imperial use, the 413 was about smooth force. A big Chrysler with a 413 wasn’t trying to be a stripped Super Stock car. It was trying to move weight like the owner had paid extra to avoid noticing physics.

The Chrysler 300 versions gave the 413 a sharper public face. Compared with the 383, the 413 is the taller-deck, longer-stroke RB engine with more displacement and more premium-car torque. What makes it different

The Mopar 413 RB is the raised-deck big block that did the heavy lifting before the 426 and 440 started hogging the stories. Its lane is clear: taller than the low-deck 383, earlier than the 426 Max Wedge spotlight, smaller than the later 440, and far more important than a forgotten lump with a duller poster. The 413 is the early RB foundation: tall-deck, long-stroke, full-size-car muscle with just enough Max Wedge glory attached to make sellers start clearing their throats.

Compared with the B engines — 361, 383, and 400 — the 413 lives upstairs. The RB block has the raised deck and the 3.75-inch stroke that separate it from the low-deck B family. That means intake width, stroke package, block height, and parts expectations need checking before the parts pile starts getting brave. A 413 isn’t a tall 383 because somebody wants the story simple. “Mopar big block” gets you in the neighborhood. B or RB tells you which driveway not to pull into.

Compared with the regular 383 B, the 413 is the bigger, taller, more luxury-weight answer. The 383 became the familiar low-deck performance name, with Road Runner, Super Bee, police-car, and street-machine credibility. The 440 has more bore, more displacement, more availability, and the reputation most people reach for when they think RB wedge power. That doesn’t make the 413 weak. It means the 440 became the easier answer after Chrysler gave everybody more cubes and more parts comfort. A 413 can be smooth, strong, and correct in the right car. It just doesn’t win the lazy “bigger number must be better” argument unless the facts, car, and purpose are allowed into the room.

Compared with the 426 Hemi, the 413 needs the usual fence around Mopar mythology. Both live in big-block Mopar conversations, but a wedge-head RB and a Gen II Hemi aren’t the same kind of trouble. The 413’s special versions were Max Wedge territory. The 426 Hemi is Elephant territory. Mixing those because both sound expensive is how people buy the wrong parts, wrong expectations, and wrong bragging rights. The engine isn’t confused. The guy using “race motor” as a parts manual is.

The 413 RB makes sense when early RB correctness matters: big Chryslers, Imperials, early performance Mopars, long-ram cars, and real Max Wedge situations where the parts prove the claim. It makes less sense when the only goal is cheap power, easy parts, or the biggest number on the air cleaner. A 440 often gets there easier. A 426 Max Wedge or Hemi gets the louder mythology. The 413 has to be judged by what it actually is, not by the shadows cast by engines that came after it.

That’s the 413’s place. It’s the early raised-deck RB wedge that gave Chrysler serious big-block reach before the 426 and 440 took over the shouting. Preserve it when the car deserves the right engine. Verify every Max Wedge claim before the price gets stupid. And don’t let bigger Mopar names shove it out of its own story. Variants

The Mopar 413 RB is where Chrysler’s raised-block wedge story starts wearing a suit, then sneaks out back and starts looking for a drag strip. It powered big Chryslers and Imperials, carried the early Chrysler 300 letter-car image, wore real ram-induction hardware in the right years, became the 1962 Max Wedge hammer, and kept working in trucks, motorhomes, and industrial equipment long after the showroom crowd moved on.

The useful split is standard passenger-car 413s, Chrysler 300 letter-car / ram-induction versions, the 1962 Max Wedge, and truck / motorhome / industrial 413s. Those lanes need to stay apart unless somebody enjoys paying letter-car money for a motorhome core.

Standard Passenger-Car 413s

The 413 arrived for 1959 as Chrysler’s first RB-series big wedge. The raised-deck block, 3.75-inch stroke, and 413 cubic inches gave Chrysler the torque it needed for New Yorkers, Imperials, and big premium cars that were allergic to feeling underpowered. This was the top-shelf wedge engine before the 426 and 440 started getting louder names.

Most standard passenger-car 413s were built for smooth authority. They were meant to move weight, pull highway gears, and make a big Chrysler feel expensive without making the driver think about physics. A normal 413 can be a strong, desirable engine. It just isn’t automatically a ram-induction engine, a Max Wedge, or a Super Stock prize because the displacement sounds serious.

That is where the buying trouble starts. “413 RB” is a useful starting point, not a full identity. Year, application, induction, heads, exhaust, compression, numbers, and documentation still decide whether the engine is a standard big-car wedge, a letter-car package, a heavy-duty work engine, or something much rarer.

Chrysler 300 Letter-Car / Ram-Induction 413s

The Chrysler 300 letter cars gave the 413 its polished performance lane. The 300E brought the 413 into the letter-car line, and the 300F and 300G made the long-ram image famous enough to make Mopar people lean over fenders like they found buried treasure. These engines weren’t just big-car lumps with prettier air cleaners.

The long-ram setup was built for torque. The long intake runners helped the engine pull hard in the low and middle range, which made sense in large, fast Chrysler letter cars built to eat highway miles. Short-ram versions moved the personality higher in the rpm range and carried more performance bite. Either way, the ram setup was engineering first and theater second, which is the right order unless the salesman got there first.

By the later 300H period, the 413 story changes again, so every 300-letter 413 should not be shoved into one pile. Correct year, induction, carburetors, linkage, exhaust, air cleaners, brackets, engine number, and documentation matter. A 413 with a ram story but missing the system isn’t a complete ram-induction engine. It is a parts hunt with good posture.

1962 Max Wedge 413s

The 1962 Max Wedge 413 is where Chrysler quit being polite. This was the Maximum Performance Wedge, built for Super Stock work and drag-strip violence before the 426 Max Wedge took over in 1963. It wasn’t a warmed-over New Yorker engine with a bad attitude. It was factory race hardware with serious induction, compression, camshaft, exhaust, and supporting parts.

Dodge Ramcharger and Plymouth Super Stock names belong in this neighborhood, but the hardware still has to prove the claim. The 413 Max Wedge used dual four-barrels, special intake hardware, serious compression choices, big exhaust, and factory intent that had very little to do with quiet commuting. Chrysler wasn’t trying to make the country-club parking lot more interesting. It was trying to win.

This is also where naming gets abused. The 1962 413 Max Wedge isn’t every later “Stage” label people like to throw around after hearing half a story. It is the 413 Maximum Performance Wedge. The 426 Max Wedge story came next. Mixing the names together might make a listing sound educated, but it usually means somebody learned Mopar history from a folding-chair argument.

A real 413 Max Wedge claim needs hard proof: block, heads, intake, carburetors, exhaust manifolds, compression, camshaft, car, transmission, rear axle, tags, paperwork, and history. A standard 413 with dual quads doesn’t become a Max Wedge because the orange paint dried evenly.

Truck, Motorhome, and Industrial 413s

The 413 also lived a long working life outside the glamorous passenger-car and drag-race lanes. Trucks, motorhomes, industrial equipment, and service applications used 413 RB power because the engine could pull, run, and survive ugly jobs that didn’t care about magazine covers.

These work-engine 413s can be useful cores, but they bring their own headaches. Different accessory drives, cooling parts, governors, manifolds, oil pans, flywheel or crank details, industrial stampings, and application-specific hardware can all show up. A truck or motorhome 413 may share the RB foundation, but it may not share the easy passenger-car swap path the seller is trying to sell.

Condition is the other problem. Work engines often lived hot, heavy, dirty, and ignored. A motorhome 413 may have spent years dragging a house down the interstate while the cooling system slowly turned into soup. An industrial 413 may have idled forever, pulled load, sat outside, or been maintained by whoever found the biggest wrench first.

The useful 413 variant map is standard passenger-car RB, Chrysler 300 / ram-induction performance, true 1962 Max Wedge, and truck / motorhome / industrial service. The 413 deserves attention, but it still needs year, application, induction, numbers, heads, exhaust, condition, and documentation before the price gets to wear a crown.

Truck, motorhome, and industrial 413s need separate inspection. Some can be tough, useful cores. Bore size affects pistons, breathing, valve clearance, compression planning, overbore limits, and value. The 413 can be strong, but it doesn’t magically become a 440 because an intake bolts on.

Parts support is decent because the 413 lives in RB territory, but it’s still not the default engine most builders reach for. The 440 gets more attention, more recipes, and more parts momentum. Some RB pieces interchange, but pistons, compression planning, intake fit, exhaust manifolds, brackets, pulleys, oil pans, crank details, and application hardware still need checking. RB support helps. It doesn’t do the measuring.

A used 413 needs identification before anyone starts bragging. Check block casting, pad stamping, bore size, crank, heads, intake, carburetion, exhaust pieces, date codes, vehicle application, and previous machine work. These engines have been swapped, rebuilt, overbored, worked hard, dressed up, detuned, converted, and misidentified for decades. Paint, chrome, and the word “wedge” don’t prove much.

Core condition matters because many 413s lived heavy lives. Big Chryslers, trucks, motorhomes, and industrial applications can mean heat, load, sludge, worn timing sets, cracked manifolds, tired valve gear, and questionable maintenance. The RB block is stout, but stout doesn’t mean immortal. A core still needs cracks checked, cylinder walls measured, deck condition inspected, and oiling condition verified before the plan gets expensive.

The 413 can make an excellent old-school torque engine when the plan matches the parts. It likes sensible compression, good heads, proper carburetion, clean ignition, decent exhaust, and enough converter or gear to move the car. It doesn’t need to pretend it’s a 440 to be useful. But when the goal is cheap maximum cubes, a 440 usually starts with more displacement and better parts momentum.

Build judgment depends on whether the 413 is correct, complete, running, or just available. A correct 413 in a Chrysler 300, Max Wedge car, early Mopar restoration, or period build can deserve the work. A complete running 413 at a sane price can be worth using. A stripped mystery core missing induction, brackets, exhaust pieces, and proof is where nostalgia starts writing checks the machine shop will cash.

Value follows evidence, not displacement alone. A documented 413 Max Wedge assembly is a different universe from a standard big-car 413. A correct letter-car engine is different from a motorhome core. A useful running RB is different from a cracked block with a seller who learned the word “wedge” yesterday. The 413 can matter, but only after the parts and paperwork stop arguing.

The Mopar 413 RB deserves respect because it helped establish Chrysler’s raised-deck big-block muscle before the 426 wedge and 440 took over the spotlight. It has real performance history, real torque use, and real restoration value in the right context. Verify the RB identity, application, bore, stroke, heads, induction, exhaust, dates, and build condition before spending money. Common Problems

The 413 RB’s trouble starts because it sits in the shadow of two louder relatives. The 426 Max Wedge made the race crowd yell. The 440 became the big RB everybody remembers. The 413 came first, carried serious Chrysler torque, wore ram-induction and Max Wedge stories, and still gets treated like either forgotten luxury iron or instant race gold. Both shortcuts are wrong.

  • Max Wedge Claims Without Proof
    The 413 has one of the most dangerous seller phrases in Mopar land: Max Wedge. The 1962 413 Max Wedge was real, serious, and built for the kind of work that made insurance men sweat through their shirts.

    That doesn’t make every 413 a Max Wedge. A real claim needs the right block, heads, intake, carburetion, exhaust, compression, camshaft, date context, vehicle application, stampings, body/VIN context, and documentation. A standard Chrysler 413 doesn’t become Super Stock hardware because somebody bolted on shiny parts and started chanting Max Wedge at the air cleaner.

Common Misconceptions

The 413 RB gets misunderstood because it has real history but not one simple identity. Luxury Chrysler torque, 300 letter-car ram induction, Max Wedge racing, and later work-duty survival all live near the 413 story. That makes the engine interesting. It also gives sellers room to build a circus tent out of one true fact.

  • “Every 413 is a Max Wedge.”
    No. The 413 Max Wedge was a specific high-performance package, not a birthmark on every 413 block. Most 413s weren’t Max Wedges, and they should not be priced or restored like they were.

    A Max Wedge claim needs hardware and documentation. Heads, intake, carburetion, exhaust, compression, camshaft, dates, vehicle context, stampings, and paperwork all need to agree. The displacement alone just says 413.
  • “A 413 is basically a 440.”
    No. Both are RB engines, and both use the same stroke, but the 413 has a smaller bore and its own parts/value story. Calling it basically a 440 skips the details that decide how the engine builds and what it’s worth.

    The 413 can be excellent in the right car or project. It doesn’t need fake 440 identity to matter. It just needs the right expectations.
  • “Any ram-induction 413 story is automatically valuable.”

Upgrade Limitations

The Mopar 413 RB wedge is where people start confusing importance with convenience. Induction is where the 413 can get expensive fast. When It Actually Makes Sense

The 413 makes sense when the engine’s identity matters. The 413 can make sense as a mild driver engine when the goal is smooth torque and old Mopar feel. With reasonable compression, a sensible cam, correct ignition, matched induction, healthy cooling, and proper exhaust, it can be a strong and satisfying street engine. It doesn’t need to be turned into a fake 440 or fake Max Wedge to earn its keep.

It makes less sense when the engine is missing, incomplete, or being chosen only because a 440 costs more. If originality doesn’t matter and the goal is serious street torque or easy parts support, a 440 may be the cleaner answer. If the goal is low-deck stroker packaging, a 400 may be smarter.
