Intro

The 385-series big block is not an FE with more lunch money.

The 429 and 460 are their own Ford big-block family. They are simple, strong, and easy to get cocky with. Big parts still need the right number, the right hardware, and the right engine family before the wrench ever clicks.

1 Standard FE-family hardware where the normal FE value applies.

2 1963-1967 427 FE head-bolt value.

3 Crossbolted 406 / 427 FE blocks only. Ordinary FE blocks do not have side crossbolts.

4 406 / 427 FE rod hardware where the higher factory value applies.


Aftermarket bolts, studs, rods, and aluminum heads use the part maker’s number and lube instructions. Don’t use this chart to overrule the parts in your hand.

A range is not a game of horseshoes. If a matched set shows 95-105, don’t give one bolt 95, the next one 101, and the last one whatever your elbow liked. Pick one value in the range and use it consistently across the set unless the real procedure says certain bolts get different numbers.

Notes

  • 385-series means 429 / 460 big block, not FE. Do not drag FE numbers into this family because both engines are big Fords.
  • The 429 / 460 head-bolt number is high enough to scare people into doing something stupid. Don’t.
  • Factory-style non-adjustable rocker arms use the listed value. Aftermarket adjustable valvetrain hardware follows the part maker’s number.
  • 429 and 460 engines are close family, but mixed-year parts and aftermarket builds still need the hardware checked before the wrench comes out.

Common Mistakes

  • Using FE torque specs on a 385-series engine because “big-block Ford” sounded specific enough.
  • Under-torquing 429 / 460 head bolts because the number looks high compared with smaller Ford engines.
  • Using the factory non-adjustable rocker value on aftermarket rocker hardware that came with its own instructions.
  • Treating every 429 / 460 parts mix like it came from one untouched factory engine.
  • Reading a range and scattering random values across head bolts, mains, rods, or intake bolts like that was ever a plan.

Bottom Line

The 385-series Ford big block is simple, strong, and not an FE.

That last part matters more than people want to admit.

Use the 429 / 460 numbers, check the actual hardware, keep matched fasteners consistent, and don’t let “big-block Ford” do your thinking.
