Intro

The 335 family is where Ford small-block assumptions start getting people in trouble.

A Cleveland is not a Windsor. A 351M or 400 is not just a taller Cleveland with truck manners. The heads, deck height, bellhousing pattern, hardware, and torque numbers need to match the engine in front of you, not the name somebody used at a swap meet.

1 Standard 351C, 351M, and 400 335-series hardware.

Aftermarket bolts, studs, rods, and aluminum heads use the part maker’s number and lube instructions. Don’t use this chart to overrule the parts in your hand.

A range is not a game of horseshoes. If a matched set shows 95-105, don’t give one bolt 95, the next one 101, and the last one whatever your elbow liked. Pick one value in the range and use it consistently across the set unless the real procedure says certain bolts get different numbers.

Notes

  • 351C, Boss 351, 351M, and 400 belong together in the 335 family, but they are not all the same engine.
  • Boss 351 gets its own higher rod and head-bolt values. Do not use the regular 351C number just because both engines say Cleveland.
  • 351M and 400 engines use the taller-deck M-block layout. Do not treat them like a plain 351C with different stickers.
  • Intake bolts are split by bolt size. If you turn 5/16 and 3/8 bolts into one number, you are guessing with extra steps.

Common Mistakes

  • Using Windsor torque habits on a Cleveland because both engines are “small-block Fords.”
  • Using standard 351C values on Boss 351 hardware because the name looked close enough.
  • Mixing 351C, 351M, and 400 assumptions without checking which block and hardware are actually on the stand.
  • Using one intake-manifold number on both bolt sizes and acting surprised when the small bolts complain.
  • Reading a range and scattering random values across head bolts, main caps, rods, or intake bolts like that was ever a plan.

Bottom Line

The 335 family is not Windsor territory.

Cleveland, Boss, M-block, and 400 details matter before the wrench ever clicks.

Check which 335 engine you have, match the hardware, use one value across the matched set, and do not let “small-block Ford” do your thinking.
