Intro

The Chevy Blue Flame six is where the old Chevrolet inline-six story gets stronger, smoother, and easier to overgeneralize.

That is the trap. A 235 or 261 is not a small-block Chevy, not an early babbitt Stovebolt, and not some mystery farm motor that gets whatever number the last guy remembered. These engines are still old Chevrolet sixes, but the head bolts, mains, rods, flywheel, manifolds, and small gasketed parts have their own habits. Guessing because “it’s just an old Chevy six” is how simple engines get expensive.

1 Common 235 / 261 working range; some 261 references center around 105 lb-ft. Use the actual block, fasteners, and rebuilder guidance if the bottom end has been changed.

2 Common 235 / 261 rod-nut working range. Some 261 references list 40 lb-ft; use the actual rod hardware and rebuilder guidance.

3 Small gasketed covers and pans distort easily. Tighten evenly and do not turn seep control into sheetmetal damage.

4 Common 235 / 261 head-bolt value. Torque in stages and follow the correct sequence.


Aftermarket rods, rebuilt engines, replacement studs, reproduction fasteners, high-compression heads, and changed driveline hardware use the rebuilder or part maker’s number. Don’t use this chart to overrule the parts in your hand.

A range is not a game of horseshoes. If a matched set shows 90-95, don’t give one head bolt 90, the next one 93, and the last one whatever your elbow liked. Pick one value in the range and use it consistently across the set unless the real procedure says certain fasteners get different numbers.

Notes

  • Blue Flame 235 / 261 engines use higher head-bolt torque than the earlier Chevrolet sixes. Do not drag early Stovebolt numbers forward just because the valve cover still says old Chevy.
  • The 261 is close enough to the 235 to fool people, but it is not just a 235 with better manners. Check the actual engine, especially when rods, block, cooling details, or truck hardware are involved.
  • Head bolts need the correct sequence and staged tightening. If the gasket leaks because the pattern was ignored, the torque number was not the problem. The person holding the wrench was.
  • Oil pans, timing covers, and small covers still use small fasteners. The engine may be tougher than the early stuff, but the sheetmetal did not magically become bridge steel.
  • Old threads, replacement hardware, and rebuilt assemblies change the job. A clean torque chart does not fix damaged holes, stretched bolts, or mystery fasteners.

Common Mistakes

  • Using early Stovebolt torque habits on a 235 / 261 because all old Chevy sixes looked close enough.
  • Treating a 261 like a generic 235 without checking the actual hardware.
  • Ignoring the head-bolt sequence and blaming the gasket when the wrench work was sloppy.
  • Cranking oil pan and timing-cover bolts down like they owe you money.
  • Using shiny reproduction hardware without checking what torque and lubricant it actually wants.
  • Reading a range and scattering random values across head bolts, mains, rods, or flywheel bolts like that was ever a plan.

Bottom Line

The Blue Flame Chevy six is tougher and more modern than the early Stovebolt crowd, but it still is not a small-block Chevy.

That middle ground is where people get careless.

Use the 235 / 261 numbers, check the actual hardware, follow the head-bolt sequence, keep matched fasteners consistent, and don’t let “old Chevy six” do your thinking.
