Intro
The Autolite 4100 is Ford’s four-barrel companion to the 2100 two-barrel family, and it is one of the better factory street carburetors Ford ever put on a V8.
It was introduced for the 1957 model year and used through the mid-1960s on Ford, Mercury, Thunderbird, Mustang, and other factory V8 applications. It was not built to be a shiny universal speed-shop trophy. It was built to start, idle, cruise, transition cleanly, and feed real Ford engines with factory manners.
The 4100 earned its reputation because it combined four-barrel airflow with Autolite’s excellent annular-discharge booster behavior. That gave it strong signal quality, good throttle response, smooth drivability, and better street manners than many carburetors that looked more impressive sitting on a parts-counter box.
The main trap is size and identity. A 1.08, 1.12, and rare 1.19 Autolite 4100 are not the same carburetor. Tag number, venturi size, linkage, choke setup, transmission application, original engine, and internal calibration all matter. Ignore those details and the carburetor will teach the lesson with fuel, hesitation, and public embarrassment.

Overview
The Autolite 4100 is a square-bore four-barrel carburetor built around the same general Ford thinking that made the 2100 respected: simple layout, annular fuel discharge, strong street manners, and practical factory calibration.
The 4100 uses primary and secondary throttle bores, an integral fuel bowl layout, fixed main jets, power valve enrichment, accelerator-pump enrichment, idle circuits, annular-discharge boosters, and application-specific choke and linkage hardware. It is a four-barrel, but it still behaves like a Ford street carburetor instead of a race part looking for excuses.
Venturi size is the quick field identifier. The common 1.08 version is generally referenced around 480 CFM. The larger 1.12 version is commonly referenced around 600 CFM. A rare 1.19 version is commonly referenced around 669 CFM. Those numbers matter because putting the wrong 4100 on the wrong engine can make a very good carburetor look like it woke up in the wrong county.
The 4100 was used across a wide range of Ford and Mercury V8 applications, including small-blocks, FE engines, Thunderbirds, full-size cars, and performance packages. But application matters. A Mustang small-block 4100 and a big Ford or Mercury FE 4100 may share the same family name while needing different linkage, choke hardware, jetting, and calibration.
The 4100’s strength is street drivability. It has enough airflow for plenty of factory V8 applications, but its real advantage is how well it meters fuel when correctly matched. The weakness is the usual Ford-carburetor problem: missing tags, mismatched cores, wrong venturi size, wrong linkage, wrong jets, and owners who think all four-barrels become interchangeable after dark.

What makes it different
Compared with the Autolite 2100, the 4100 is the four-barrel branch of the same practical Ford carburetor philosophy. The 2100 is the two-barrel workhorse. The 4100 adds secondary throttle bores and more total airflow while keeping the annular-discharge behavior that gives these Ford carburetors their clean street manners.
Compared with the Motorcraft 4300, the 4100 is the earlier and generally better-liked Ford four-barrel. The 4300 belongs to the later emissions-transition era and carries a much rougher reputation. The 4100 is the carburetor people often wish Ford had kept improving instead of replacing with cleverness that aged like milk in the sun.
Compared with many Holley-style aftermarket four-barrels, the 4100 is less modular and less hot-rod-fashionable, but it can be excellent on a street Ford when sized correctly. It was designed as an OEM carburetor, so linkage, choke behavior, drivability, and cold-start manners mattered. Shiny parts impress people. Correct calibration impresses engines.
Compared with the 4100’s own 1.08 and 1.12 versions, size changes the whole story. A 1.08 can be a very good small-block street carburetor. A 1.12 can fit larger engines and higher airflow needs. Swap those blindly and the engine will not care what the internet said.
The 4100’s biggest advantage is balance. It gives four-barrel airflow without throwing away the signal quality and manners that made the 2100 respected. Its biggest weakness is that people treat it like a generic four-barrel instead of a family with real venturi, tag, and application differences.

The useful Autolite 4100 split is venturi size and generation. Labels like Mustang, Thunderbird, FE, small-block, manual-transmission, automatic-transmission, and high-performance matter at the calibration and linkage level, but they are not clean family-level variants. The venturi number and tag tell the truth. The swap-meet story usually just talks louder.

Version Notes: The 1.08 is the 4100 most Ford street people want for small-block use. It gives good response, good manners, and enough airflow for many mild engines without acting like someone bolted a big-block carburetor onto a grocery getter and called it performance.

Version Notes: The 1.12 is the larger common 4100. It belongs where the engine can use the airflow. Put it on an engine that wants a 1.08 and then complain about soft response, and the carburetor is not the guilty party. It is just following physics while the owner argues with the throttle.

Common Problems
- Wrong venturi size – A 1.08, 1.12, and 1.19 4100 are not the same carburetor. Wrong size means wrong signal, wrong airflow, and a fine chance to blame a good design for a bad match.
- Missing carburetor tag – The tag carries the best identity information. Venturi mark helps, but tag number tells the cleaner story. Missing tags turn a Ford carburetor into a guessing game with fuel stains.
- Wrong jets – Jetting follows application, venturi size, transmission, engine, and calibration. Jets from another 4100 can fit and still be wrong. Brass threads do not prove brains were involved.
- Power valve mismatch – The wrong power valve can create rich operation, lean stumble, poor load response, or tuning confusion that the idle screws did not volunteer to solve.

- “A 1.12 is always better than a 1.08.” Not if the engine loses response and signal. Bigger can still be wrong.

Autolite 4100 compatibility starts with venturi size, tag number, and original application. A 1.08 small-block carburetor and a 1.12 FE carburetor may share the same family name, but they are not the same answer.
The 4100 uses a Ford square-bore four-barrel pattern, but base gasket, spacer, PCV routing, throttle linkage, kickdown geometry, choke hardware, and hood clearance still matter.
