Intro

The Mopar RB-series big block is the tall-deck wedge family: 413, 426 wedge, and 440. It isn’t the low-deck B-series 383/400 family, it isn’t the 426 Hemi, and it sure isn’t a small-block that ate too many parts-store cheeseburgers.

This is the big Mopar wedge family that carried big cars, police work, tow duty, luxury torque, Max Wedge nastiness, and the 440 muscle-car reputation that still makes sellers grin like they found buried gold. Same tall-deck family, different engines, different roles, different values, and plenty of ways to get fooled.

The 440 gets most of the attention because it lived in the right era, wore the right badges, and made big torque without needing Hemi money. The 413 matters because it started the RB story and powered plenty of serious early Chrysler iron. The 426 wedge matters because people confuse it with the 426 Hemi, and that’s where the expensive nonsense starts.

A real RB wedge can be a great engine. A guessed-at one can be a wallet-eating pile of assumptions. Start with the tall-deck family, then prove the exact displacement, year, application, parts, and story before the seller’s smile becomes your machine-shop bill.

Engines in This Family

The RB lineup runs from the early 413 through the 426 wedge and into the famous 440. Same raised-deck wedge family, different jobs, different values, and different ways to get overcharged by a story with fresh paint.

Overview

The RB-series was Chrysler’s raised-deck big-block wedge platform. RB literally means raised block, and that taller deck separates it from the low-deck B-series engines like the 350, 361, 383, and 400. Same broad Mopar big-block world, but not the same block height, not the same intake fit, and not the same rotating assumptions.

The 413 came first as Chrysler’s big-displacement RB answer for heavy cars, luxury applications, police packages, and performance work before the later muscle-era 440 became the number everybody remembers. It was a real engine with real torque, not just a footnote sitting in the 440’s shadow.

The 426 wedge sits in the middle of the story and causes the most confusion. It’s an RB wedge engine, not the Gen II 426 Hemi. Same cubic inches, different cylinder-head architecture, different identity, different parts conversation, and very different value when the word Hemi starts getting thrown around by somebody who knows exactly what he’s doing.

The 440 became the famous street bruiser. It gave Mopar big-block cars the kind of torque that made ordinary roads feel shorter and rear tires feel nervous. In factory form, it showed up in everything from big luxury cars to muscle-era legends, with performance versions, police use, marine/industrial use, and enough swapped engines to make originality claims need a flashlight and a bad attitude.

The RB family is simple enough to name and complicated enough to inspect. Tall deck. Wedge heads. Big torque. Serious parts interchange with limits. Plenty of good iron, and plenty of dressed-up stories trying to become money.

Those are the broad family facts. They put the RB in its own tall-deck lane, which is where it belongs. The family shares Mopar big-block wedge DNA with the B-series, but shared DNA doesn’t make the parts pile universal.


Deck height is the big separator. RB intakes are wider than B intakes, rotating assemblies differ by displacement, and application hardware can change more than a seller wants to admit. A part can be Mopar big-block hardware and still be wrong for the engine on the stand.


Balance details also need attention, especially when dealing with later 440 combinations, replacement parts, torque converters, flywheels, and mixed rebuilds. Chrysler gave builders enough combinations to make guessing expensive. Don’t help the problem.

Identification

A Mopar RB engine looks like a Chrysler big block because that’s what it is. The distributor sits up front, angled into the block. The engine has the wide Mopar big-block look, wedge-style heads, big intake valley, and enough physical size to remind you that Chrysler wasn’t building this thing for lawn equipment.

The key RB clue is deck height. The RB block is taller than the low-deck B-series block. That extra deck height changes intake manifold width and rotating assembly dimensions, and it’s one of the main reasons “big-block Mopar” isn’t enough information to buy parts like a grown adult.

The B and RB engines can fool people who identify engines by paint, valve covers, and confidence. A 383 and a 440 can look related because they are related in the broad Chrysler big-block wedge world. But low-deck and raised-deck aren’t the same thing. Intake fit, block casting, pad stamping, application clues, and measurements matter.

The 426 wedge needs special attention because it shares the famous 426 number with the Hemi. A 426 wedge has wedge heads. A 426 Hemi has Hemi heads. If someone says “426” and lets your imagination do the expensive part, stop right there.

Visual ID gets the engine into the Mopar big-block wedge world. Deck height helps separate RB from B. It still doesn’t prove displacement, year, originality, compression, head casting, crankshaft, balance hardware, or whether the engine belongs to the car it’s sitting in. The big-block shape gets you close. The numbers and measurements still have to earn the verdict.

RB displacement claims need proof because the family is full of money words: 413, 426, 440, Max Wedge, Six Pack, Magnum, Police, HP, and every other badge somebody can use to season the stew.

A 413 can get ignored until someone decides it’s rare and suddenly the story grows legs. A 426 wedge can get dressed up with just enough vague language to make people think Hemi without saying Hemi. A 440 can become “HP,” “Magnum,” “Six Pack,” “police,” or “original” faster than a seller can point at an orange engine and look serious.

Exact identification means checking casting numbers, stamped pad information, date codes, block features, original application clues, crankshaft, bore, stroke, head castings, intake casting, carburetion, exhaust manifolds, balance hardware, transmission pieces, and rebuild history. Old Mopar big blocks have been swapped, bored, decked, painted, restamped, rebuilt, and misdescribed long enough that confidence is just noise.

The 426 wedge is the most dangerous naming problem. It’s a real RB engine and a real piece of Mopar history, but it isn’t the 426 Hemi. That difference can change the value by enough money to make your coffee taste like regret.

The 440 brings its own trouble because it’s the number everybody wants. A plain 440, a 440 HP, a 440 Six Pack, a marine 440, a motorhome 440, a later low-compression 440, and a swapped 440 aren’t all the same deal. Same displacement doesn’t mean same value, same hardware, or same plan.

Shared Design Patterns

The RB family splits into early big-torque luxury and performance use, 426 wedge confusion and Max Wedge history, and 440 muscle-era fame. That’s the useful way to look at it. Flattening the whole family into “basically a 440” is how good engines get misunderstood and wrong parts get ordered.

The 413 is the early RB foundation. It powered heavy cars and serious Chrysler products before the 440 became the big name. In performance trim, especially in the early 1960s, it was no sleepy old barge motor. It helped establish the RB as a torque-first big-block family with real muscle under the polite sheetmetal.

The 426 wedge is the important middle engine. It belongs to the RB wedge family and has its own performance history, including Max Wedge territory, but it lives forever in the shadow of the 426 Hemi because people love confusing numbers when money is nearby. A good 426 wedge is worth respect. It still isn’t a Hemi.

The 440 is the family’s headline engine. It made big torque, worked in heavy cars, powered famous muscle-era Mopars, and became one of the most recognizable big-block names Chrysler ever built. It could be civilized, brutal, lazy, strong, low-compression, high-performance, or completely misrepresented depending on year, parts, and application.

That’s the RB pattern: tall-deck torque, serious big-car roots, real factory performance history, and enough badge confusion to punish anyone who buys by nickname.

Common Problems

The RB family doesn’t need one fatal flaw to get expensive. Age, heat, oil leaks, worn valvetrain parts, wrong combinations, heavy vehicle use, racing abuse, and parts-interchange assumptions can all make a strong engine turn into a lesson.

  • Wrong Identity and Seller Stretching
    The biggest problem is the story. A 413 gets called rare when convenient. A 426 wedge gets priced with Hemi fog around it. A plain 440 becomes an HP engine because orange paint apparently performs miracles now. Names need evidence.
  • B vs. RB Parts Confusion
    Low-deck B and raised-deck RB engines share Chrysler big-block traits, but they don’t use all the same parts. Intake manifolds are the big obvious problem because deck height changes the fit. Pushrods, rotating parts, brackets, exhaust fit, and application pieces can also bite.
  • 426 Wedge vs. 426 Hemi Confusion
    This one costs real money. Wedge heads and Hemi heads aren’t close enough, related enough, or negotiable enough. If the claim says 426 and the price smells like Hemi, the hardware had better back it up.
  • Oil Leaks
    Valve covers, intake valley areas, timing cover, oil pan, rear main, fuel pump area, and old gaskets can leak. Some old Mopar seepage is normal. A steady drip pattern means the engine is marking territory like it owns the shop.
  • Valvetrain Wear
    Shaft rockers are a Mopar strength, but worn rocker shafts, tired arms, pushrod issues, lifter noise, cam wear, and oiling neglect still happen. A big-block that sounds like a coffee can full of bolts doesn’t become charming because it’s vintage.
  • Cooling Problems
    RB engines make heat, especially in heavy cars or tight swaps. Weak radiators, lazy fans, bad shrouds, poor timing, clogged passages, and wrong pulley setups can make a healthy engine act sick.
  • Exhaust and Fitment Trouble
    RB engines are big. Header fit, manifold fit, steering clearance, brake booster clearance, torsion-bar clearance, starter access, and plug access can all get stupid fast in the wrong chassis.
  • Compression and Smog-Era Mismatch
    Not every 440 is a tire-murdering monster. Later low-compression engines can be useful cores, but they aren’t the same as earlier high-performance combinations. Build potential and factory output aren’t the same thing.
  • Balance Hardware Mistakes
    Some combinations need the correct damper, converter, flywheel, or flexplate balance setup. Mixing parts because they bolt on can create vibration, bearing trouble, and the kind of problem that gets blamed on the engine instead of the person who assembled the mess.
  • Old Castings and Bad Rebuilds
    Cracked blocks, tired heads, worn bores, decked pads, mismatched pistons, mystery cams, wrong compression, and budget rebuilds can all hide under clean paint. A fresh-looking RB still needs inspection. Paint is not machine work.

Common Misconceptions

  • “All RB engines are basically 440s.”
  • No. The 413, 426 wedge, and 440 share the raised-deck RB family, but displacement, crankshaft, bore, stroke, application, heads, compression, and value can change the whole deal.
  • “A 426 is a Hemi.”
  • Not automatically. Mopar built a 426 wedge and a 426 Hemi. The wedge belongs here. The Hemi doesn’t. Same cubic inches. Different engine family. Different money.
  • “B and RB parts all interchange.”
  • No. Some parts cross the broader big-block world, but deck height, intake width, rotating assembly details, and application hardware matter. “Big-block Mopar” isn’t a complete part number.
  • “Every 440 is a performance engine.”
  • No. Plenty of 440s were built for big cars, police use, towing, marine duty, motorhomes, or lower-compression later applications. Some are great engines. That doesn’t make every one a factory muscle-car hero.
  • “A 413 isn’t worth caring about.”
  • Wrong. A 413 can be very important in the right car or build. It may not have the 440’s name recognition, but early RB torque and period correctness still matter.
  • “A 400 is part of the RB family because it’s a big-block.”
  • No. The 400 is a low-deck B-series engine. It belongs with the B family, not the raised-deck RB engines.
  • “Orange paint proves something.”
  • It proves somebody had paint. That’s about it. Paint, decals, valve covers, and air cleaners can all lie without even breaking a sweat.
  • “Max Wedge means any early big RB with a story.”
  • No. Max Wedge identity needs the correct hardware and evidence. The name carries real meaning, so of course people stretch it. That’s what people do when a badge gets valuable.

Compatibility Notes

The RB family lives in the Mopar big-block world, but parts compatibility still needs discipline. The raised-deck block height is the first line in the sand. A low-deck B intake won’t simply become an RB intake because both engines have big valve covers and Chrysler ancestry.

Intake manifolds are one of the biggest gotchas. RB engines use a wider intake layout than low-deck B engines. That one mistake alone can turn a swap meet “deal” into garage art.

Cylinder heads have more overlap across big-block wedge families than some other parts, but that doesn’t mean every head is right for every build. Chamber size, valve size, port style, year, compression, exhaust fit, and application all matter. A head can bolt on and still be wrong for the job.

Rotating assemblies are displacement-specific. Cranks, rods, pistons, compression height, balance requirements, dampers, converters, flywheels, and flexplates need to match the real engine combination. Mopar big-block parts can be friendly until they’re not, and then they get expensive.

The 426 wedge and 426 Hemi share the number, not the same top-end architecture. Hemi heads, Hemi pistons, Hemi intake, Hemi valvetrain, and Hemi exhaust don’t belong in the wedge parts conversation unless the goal is to prove nobody read the engine family label.

Transmission fit needs year and hardware checks. Big-block bellhousing patterns get you part of the way, but crank flange details, converter register, flexplate/flywheel, starter, balance, and transmission year can still cause grief.

Swap work needs more than engine mounts and hope. Exhaust clearance, steering, torsion bars, brake booster clearance, cooling capacity, throttle linkage, oil pan, accessory drive, driveline strength, and hood clearance can all become the part nobody priced until the car was already half apart.

Reality Check

The RB family earned its reputation the old-fashioned way: displacement, torque, durability, and factory performance history. These engines can make a heavy Mopar feel like it just remembered violence. That’s why people like them, and that’s why people lie about them.

The danger isn’t that RB engines are bad. The danger is that the names are valuable enough to bend stories. A 440 sounds better than a 413 to most buyers. A 426 sounds like Hemi money to anyone half-listening. Max Wedge language can make grown adults forget to ask whether the hardware came with the legend or just wandered into the sentence.

A good RB plan starts with the actual engine. Low-deck versus raised-deck, wedge versus Hemi, 413 versus 426 versus 440, HP versus ordinary, early versus late, original versus swapped, internal versus external balance, street versus marine or motorhome history — all of it changes the build, the parts, and the value.

The RB is a great family when treated honestly. It becomes expensive stupidity when every big Mopar wedge gets rounded up to the most valuable story in the room.

Don’t let a badge, paint job, air cleaner, or vague “426” grin do the thinking. The RB family rewards people who verify the iron and punishes people who buy the legend first.

An RB wedge can be one of Mopar’s best old big-block finds. Just make sure it’s the engine being sold, not the legend being rented.
