Intro
The Motorcraft 4350 is Ford’s later spread-bore four-barrel carburetor, used after the 4300D era on emissions-controlled Ford, truck, big-engine, and some AMC / Jeep applications.
It belongs to the same unpleasant neighborhood as the 4300D: small primaries, larger secondaries, spread-bore intake fitment, emissions-era calibration, choke hardware, air-valve behavior, and enough linkage detail to punish anyone who thinks “four-barrel” is a complete identification.
The 4350 was not built as a hot-rod universal carburetor. It was built as an OEM spread-bore emissions-era carburetor with primary metering, secondary metering, idle circuits, accelerator-pump operation, power enrichment, electric-assisted choke hardware, and application-specific calibration working together as a system.
That system matters. The service procedure warns against disturbing the preset relationship between throttle position, vacuum-piston rod height, and main-jet fuel flow. That is Ford’s polite way of saying the linkage is not there for decoration, and your screwdriver is not automatically smarter than the factory fixture.

Overview
The Motorcraft 4350 is a four-barrel spread-bore carburetor made of three main assemblies: air horn, main body, and throttle body. It uses five basic fuel-metering systems: idle, primary metering, secondary metering, accelerating, and power enrichment.
The layout is built around small-primary / large-secondary behavior. The primaries handle normal driving. The large secondaries handle heavier load and higher airflow demand. That sounds simple until you add spread-bore intake fitment, secondary-throttle behavior, vacuum-piston metering relationships, choke hardware, altitude compensation on some units, and emissions-era calibration.
The 4350’s metering relationship is more delicate than a simple square-bore four-barrel. The throttle plate position, main jets, metering rods, and vacuum-piston rod height are tied together. Ford’s own service instructions warn that this relationship is preset and should not be altered during disassembly and reassembly.
Some 4350s used altitude-compensator hardware. That system leaned the mixture at high altitude and included bypass-intake behavior tied into the choke system for cold starts. It is not an ornament. If it leaks, sticks, is missing, or gets misunderstood, the carburetor will make the engine run badly and let the owner blame everything except the part he ignored.
The 4350 can work when complete, clean, sealed, adjusted correctly, and matched to the correct intake and linkage. It is not a forgiving carburetor. Wrong gaskets, worn throttle shafts, bad choke hardware, sticky secondary parts, missing altitude hardware, and linkage disturbed during rebuilding can make it behave like a factory carburetor that has had enough of people.

What makes it different
Compared with the Autolite 4100, the 4350 is a later emissions-era spread-bore carburetor, not a simple factory square-bore street carb. The 4100 is simpler and better liked. The 4350 carries more late-era hardware and fewer excuses when the wrong parts are installed.
Compared with the 4300D, the 4350 is the later spread-bore branch. It continued Ford’s move toward small-primary / large-secondary spread-bore behavior, but with its own body, linkage, choke, metering, and service details. A 4350 is not a 4300D with a different badge.
Compared with the Motorcraft 4300A, the 4350 is a different intake-pattern conversation. The 4300A belongs to the square-bore side of the 4300 family. The 4350 belongs to the spread-bore side of Ford’s later four-barrel world. Bolt pattern assumptions are where bad swaps start wearing a grin.
Compared with the Rochester Quadrajet, the 4350 shares the broad small-primary / large-secondary spread-bore idea, but it is not a Quadrajet and does not interchange like one. Ford spread-bore parts, adapters, linkage, choke hardware, and air-valve behavior need to be treated as their own system.
The 4350’s biggest difference is that it is not friendly to casual rebuilding. The metering linkage relationship matters. The secondary throttle hardware matters. The choke hardware matters. The useful 4350 split is standard 4350 versus altitude-compensator 4350. Application calibration, linkage, choke hardware, emissions plumbing, and original vehicle use still matter, but those are not separate family-level variants.

Version Notes: The standard 4350 is already fussy enough without somebody helping it fail. The throttle position, vacuum-piston rod height, main jets, metering rods, secondary action, and choke hardware need to stay in agreement. Once that relationship is disturbed, the carburetor can run badly while looking fully assembled. That is the kind of trick that makes a mechanic stare at the bench and reconsider his career choices.

Common Problems
- Metering-linkage relationship disturbed – The throttle position, vacuum-piston rod height, main jets, and metering rods are tied together. Alter that relationship during rebuilding and the carburetor can run badly while still looking like all the pieces are present.
- Vacuum-piston / metering-rod problems – Sticky pistons, wrong rod height, worn linkage, or damaged parts can disturb the primary fuel curve. That is not a normal tune-up adjustment. That is the carburetor’s math being wrong.
- Secondary throttle shaft wear – The 4350 secondary throttle shaft uses a split arrangement. Worn bores, poor sealing, or sloppy secondary shaft fit can create air leaks and secondary-control trouble.
- Secondary plates not seating – The throttle plates must seat correctly in the bores. If they are misaligned, bent, or installed carelessly, the carburetor will leak air and refuse to behave at idle or transition.

- “A 4350 is basically a Quadrajet.” No. Similar spread-bore thinking does not make Ford and Rochester parts interchangeable.
- “715 CFM means it belongs on anything big.” No. Intake pattern, linkage, calibration, choke hardware, emissions setup, and vehicle application still matter.
- “The altitude compensator is optional.” Not if the carburetor was calibrated around it. A leaking or gutted compensator is not a performance modification. It is a problem wearing a vacuum fitting.

Motorcraft 4350 compatibility starts with intake pattern, linkage, tag identity, choke hardware, altitude-compensator hardware, and original application. It is a Ford spread-bore carburetor, not a universal four-barrel.
The 4350 does not interchange cleanly with Rochester Quadrajets, 4300A square-bore units, or generic Holley-style square-bore carburetors without the correct intake or adapter. Bolt holes are not a complete engineering department.
Altitude-compensator versions need their compensator hardware intact, sealed, and matched to the application. The high-altitude system is not adjustable, so backyard tuning it with missing hoses and optimistic thinking is not a plan.
