Intro
The Mopar B-series big block is the low-deck wedge family: 350, 361, 383, and 400. It isn’t the tall-deck RB family, it isn’t a Hemi, and it sure isn’t a small-block wearing bigger shoes. It’s the shorter-deck Chrysler big block that carried everything from late-1950s big-car duty to real muscle-era street work.
The 383 made the family famous because it landed in the right cars, made honest torque, and didn’t need a parade float’s worth of hood clearance. Engines in This Family
The B-series lineup runs through the low-deck wedge engines below. Same broad family, different displacement, different reputation, and different ways to get sold the wrong story.
The 350 is the early, short-run member of the B-series family. It helped launch the low-deck big-block wedge layout, but it doesn’t carry the same recognition as the 383. That makes it easy to overlook and easy to misidentify. It belongs in the family, but it shouldn’t be treated like a mystery 383 just because somebody wants the story to sound better.
The 361 was a common early low-deck big block with real full-size and work-duty history. It isn’t the glamour engine, but it matters because it shares the family shape and can get pulled into wrong-displacement claims. A 361 can be useful, restorable, and historically correct. It just isn’t a 383 because the seller got ambitious.
The 383 is the B-series name most people recognize. It earned that reputation through wide use, strong street manners, factory performance applications, and enough muscle-era credibility to stand on its own. A good 383 can be one of the best practical Mopar big blocks. A claimed 383 still needs numbers, hardware, and condition checked before the price gets brave.
The 400 is the later big-bore low-deck engine. Factory versions often suffered from low compression and emissions-era tuning, which hurt the name. Builders learned to look past that. The 400 block can be a strong foundation, especially when stroke, compression, heads, cam, and induction are chosen with a plan instead of a catalog hangover. Don’t confuse factory dullness with useless iron.

Overview
The B-series arrived as Chrysler’s low-deck big-block wedge platform. It gave Mopar a strong, compact-enough big-block foundation without using the taller RB deck height found under engines like the 413, 426 wedge, and 440. Same broad big-block world, different block height, different rotating parts, and different assumptions.
The 350 and 361 launched the early side of the family, mostly in full-size and heavier-duty work where Chrysler needed torque, durability, and room to grow. They don’t carry the later muscle-car glow, but they’re not background noise. They’re the starting point for the low-deck wedge story.
The family hit its stride with the 383. It became the workhorse-performance answer because it fit a lot of cars, made good power, and carried enough factory performance hardware to earn respect without needing 440 cubic inches to do it. A good 383 doesn’t need excuses. It just needs the right combination and somebody who knows what they’re looking at.
The 400 replaced the 383 as the low-deck big block moved into the 1970s. It brought a big bore and useful core potential, but factory compression and emissions-era tuning dragged down its street reputation. That doesn’t make the 400 junk. It means the factory version and the build potential aren’t the same conversation.
The B-series family sits in a useful but confusing place. It shares Mopar big-block DNA with the RB engines, but it isn’t the same block. Those are the broad family facts. They put the B-series in the right mechanical neighborhood, but they don’t finish the job. A 383 and a 400 both belong here, but they don’t share the same bore, factory reputation, compression history, or build assumptions.
The deck-height difference is the big family separator. B and RB engines share enough Chrysler big-block personality to confuse people, but intake fit, rotating parts, block height, and application details don’t bend just because somebody said “big-block Mopar” with confidence.
Use the specs to orient the inspection, then match the actual engine. Heads, intake, brackets, exhaust, transmission fit, balance parts, and vehicle application still need checking. A part can be Mopar big-block hardware and still be wrong for the low-deck engine on the stand.

Identification
A Mopar B-series engine looks like a Chrysler big block because it’s one, but the low-deck detail matters. The distributor sits up front, angled into the block, unlike Chevrolet’s rear-distributor habit. The engine has the wide Mopar big-block look, big cylinder heads, front-mounted distributor, and wedge-engine layout that separate it from small-block LA engines and early Hemi/Poly confusion.
The B-series and RB engines can look close enough to fool people who identify engines by enthusiasm. The big external clue is deck height, but that isn’t always obvious when the engine is buried in a car. The B block is the low-deck version. The RB is taller. Intake manifold width, block casting numbers, pad stamp location, and engine dimensions are what keep the argument from turning into parking-lot folklore.
The valve covers won’t save you. Air cleaners won’t save you. Orange paint definitely won’t save you. A dressed B-series can look mean, stock, restored, or suspiciously expensive depending on what somebody bolted on last weekend. Those pieces describe the outfit. They don’t prove the body underneath.

Common Problems
The B-series doesn’t have one magic defect that ruins the whole family. Most trouble comes from age, heat, oil leaks, worn valvetrain parts, bad rebuilds, wrong combinations, and people assuming Mopar big-block parts interchange like they’re all one happy bucket.
- Wrong Identity and Seller Stretching

A real performance 383 is a great engine. A tired, low-compression, mismatched, or incorrectly identified 383 is still just work with a better name. The 383 badge helps only after the hardware proves it deserves the attention. - “The 400 is junk because it came from the smog years.”
Factory 400s often got stuck with low compression and emissions-era tuning, but the block itself can be valuable build material. The big bore gives it serious potential, especially in stroker builds. Dismissing every 400 is how people walk past good cores while bragging about how smart they are. - “A 361 isn’t worth knowing.”
The 361 isn’t the hero engine, but it matters for identification, restoration, and early big-block Mopar history. It also matters because sellers and buyers mislabel things when they don’t know what they’re looking at. Ignoring the 361 doesn’t make it disappear. It just makes the inspection dumber. - “Valve covers and air cleaners prove the engine.”
No. They prove somebody had valve covers and an air cleaner. Dress-up parts move. Decals lie. Paint hides nothing that numbers and measurements can’t expose later. - “Any big-block Mopar intake should fit.”
That’s expensive nonsense. Low-deck B and tall-deck RB intake fit is one of the classic Mopar big-block mistakes. The engine family has to be identified before the intake order happens, unless buying the wrong manifold is part of the hobby now.

Compatibility Notes
Compatibility starts with the low-deck fact. The B-series is not the RB-series. The deck-height difference affects intake manifold fit and combination planning. A 383 and a 440 may both be Mopar big blocks, but the parts counter doesn’t care about your family reunion speech.
Transmission fit needs year and application checking. Big-block Chrysler bellhousing patterns are not the same conversation as small-block LA parts, and crank flange, converter, flywheel, flexplate, starter, and transmission-era details can matter. Don’t assume a transmission bolts up correctly just because both parts came from something Mopar once sneezed on.

The family’s biggest strength is also the source of trouble.
