D-500 and Super D-500 claims need careful handling. A real D-500 package can mean stronger performance intent and proper factory hardware. Super D-500 dual-four-barrel talk raises the stakes. Before anybody talks camshafts and carburetors, the actual core needs to prove it isn’t worn out, cracked, cobbled together, or missing the parts that make it useful.
Displacement is still the second limitation. The 361 carries big-block size and weight without big-block cubic inches. That doesn’t make it bad. It makes the build math strict. A 361 can be a smooth, tough, period-correct engine, but if the goal is serious power, larger Mopar wedges usually make the argument easier. Cylinder head and airflow upgrades need a matched plan. The 361 can respond to better breathing, but it doesn’t have the cubic inches to hide every mismatch. Big ports, too much carburetor, lazy compression, and the wrong cam can make it soggy. The head, piston, chamber, compression, intake, exhaust, and gear package has to work as a group. The bigger engines can cover more sins with displacement. The 361 tends to put those sins right on the invoice.
Pistons, compression, and bore condition deserve special caution. The 361 isn’t the engine with the fattest modern shelf support, and old cores vary. Don’t assume a 383 or 400 piston answer fixes a 361. Bore size, compression height, chamber volume, deck clearance, valve clearance, and intended fuel all have to be checked before the machine shop starts cutting like confidence is a measuring tool. Don’t overbore one just to chase a number, either. Wall condition, core shift, corrosion, and intended use matter more than bragging about a few extra cubic inches nobody will feel from the driver’s seat.
Induction is another place people overdo it. A proper four-barrel or correct period-style setup can make sense, especially on a car that originally carried a stronger 361 package. A huge carburetor and mismatched intake don’t make the engine bigger. They just make the mistakes easier to hear. The 361 wants air it can actually use, ignition timing that fits the fuel and compression, and exhaust that helps without turning the build into a fake Max Wedge audition.
The honest upgrade plan is mild and purposeful. Build it as a clean street engine, correct restoration engine, or useful truck/driver engine. Keep the cam reasonable, compression realistic, carburetion matched, ignition sharp, cooling healthy, and exhaust sensible. Preserve hard-to-replace application parts, especially on early, truck, or industrial packages. The 361 can be a good, durable, interesting Mopar wedge when it’s built for its actual job. It becomes a bad bet when somebody spends larger-engine money trying to make the 361 prove a point it never needed to prove.

When It Actually Makes Sense
The 361 makes sense when it’s already the correct engine for the vehicle. If the car, truck, or industrial application came with a 361 and the engine is complete, rebuildable, and tied to the original package, keeping it can be smart. Correctness has value. Completeness has value. So doesn’t tearing apart an honest old Mopar just because a bigger number exists.
It also makes sense when the goal is a mild old Mopar driver. A healthy 361 with good compression, proper ignition, reasonable carburetion, sensible exhaust, and the right gearing can be smooth, useful, and enjoyable. It won’t have the easy torque of a 440 or the reputation of a 383, but it can do honest work without pretending to be the family hero.
The 361 is at its best when the build matches the job. In a correct passenger car, it can preserve the vehicle’s identity. In a truck or industrial setting, it can keep the original workhorse character intact. In a mild cruiser, it can deliver old big-block feel without needing a fake performance costume. That’s the lane. Honest, useful, and mechanically real.
It makes less sense when the engine is missing, the vehicle isn’t being restored, and a larger B or RB core is available. If the plan is a serious street performance build, the 383, 400, and 440 usually make the argument easier. More displacement, more common performance recipes, stronger resale appeal, and better parts logic all matter. The 361 can be built, but it has to be built for a reason.
It also makes less sense when the engine is a rough truck or industrial core with missing application parts. That kind of 361 can be useful, but the inspection needs to come before the enthusiasm. A cheap core stops being cheap when the crank, pistons, heads, cooling pieces, mounts, brackets, and induction all need help at the same time.
Plain answer: build the 361 when it’s correct, complete, useful, or already part of the vehicle’s story. Keep it mild, matched, and honest. It’s a durable B-series Mopar with real value in the right job, not the best shortcut to big power when bigger Mopar wedges are sitting in the same family argument.

Compatibility Notes
Family identity.
The 361 is a low-deck Mopar B-series wedge big-block. It isn’t a Chevrolet 350, it isn’t a small-block Mopar 360, and it isn’t an RB 413, 426 wedge, or 440. It shares family territory with the 350, 383, and 400 B engines, but same family doesn’t mean every part swaps without proof.
Bore and stroke proof.
Verify the actual engine before trusting the number. The 361 B used about a 4.125-inch bore and 3.375-inch stroke. That stroke is shared across the low-deck B family, so stroke alone won’t separate every B engine. Bore, casting marks, date codes, crank, pistons, heads, and vehicle context all need checking before calling it a 361, a 383, or somebody’s “probably a 440” special.
361 versus 383 and 400.
The 361 isn’t just a 383 with worse luck. The shared low-deck architecture helps, but bore size, piston choice, compression package, cylinder heads, induction, exhaust, and year/application details still matter. A 383 or 400 build recipe can point in a direction. It doesn’t get to order parts for the 361 without measuring first.
361 versus RB engines.
The 361 B isn’t an RB engine. The 413, 426 wedge, and 440 use the raised-deck RB layout. Intake manifolds, block height, some rotating assembly assumptions, accessory layout, exhaust routing, and vehicle fit can change. “Big-block Mopar” is a useful label only until somebody starts buying parts with it.
Passenger-car, truck, and industrial differences.
A 361 may come from a passenger car, light truck, medium-duty truck, or industrial setting depending on year and application. Those engines can carry different accessory drives, water-pump housings, manifolds, mounts, governors, carburetion, oil pans, flywheels or converters, cooling pieces, and linkage. Heads, pistons, and compression.

Induction and exhaust.
Factory two-barrel, four-barrel, performance, truck, and industrial hardware all need exact identification by application. Don’t assume the intake, carburetor, linkage, kickdown, air cleaner, exhaust manifolds, or downpipes from one 361 setup fits another body or another job. Correct rare pieces can matter more than shiny replacements.
Cooling, accessories, and mounts.
Water-pump housing, pulley alignment, brackets, generator or alternator setup, power steering, oil pan, mounts, radiator clearance, fan position, and throttle/kickdown linkage can be application-sensitive. Keep the original hardware until the swap or rebuild is proven. The little pieces are usually what make the big engine act installed.
Transmission and drivetrain fit.
Verify the exact year, crank, transmission, bellhousing or case pattern, converter or flywheel, starter location, linkage, mounts, and driveshaft consequences. Early automatic, manual, pushbutton-era, truck, and industrial setups can carry parts that don’t care about later Mopar swap folklore.
Restoration-correct versus driver-correct.
For a restoration-correct vehicle, the right 361 and its supporting hardware may be the point. For a driver, mild B-engine updates can make sense if they fit the vehicle and don’t wreck serviceability. For a performance/custom build, be honest before the money starts moving: a 383, 400, or 440 may be the smarter starting point, even if the 361 is sitting there looking offended.

Reality Check
The 361 B isn’t the Mopar big-block people brag about first, and that’s exactly why it needs a clean read. It was not the one-year 350, not the later 383 hero, not the big-bore 400, and not an RB wearing a smaller shirt. It was the useful early low-deck B wedge that Chrysler kept putting to work after the launch-party glitter wore off.
Its best argument is usefulness. The 361 served passenger cars, carried real early performance identities in the right Dodge and Plymouth packages, and later kept earning its keep in truck and industrial duty. That range gives it more credibility than the usual “forgotten engine” shrug. It also gives sellers plenty of room to turn one plain 361 into three different fairy tales before lunch.
The proof still has to come from the parts. A D-500, Super D-500, Commando, Golden Commando, Sonoramic, truck, or industrial claim needs the right engine, induction, hardware, year, application, and documentation. The 361 has enough legitimate versions to be interesting, but not enough fame to let sloppy evidence drive the price.
As a build choice, the 361 is honest but narrow. It can make a good driver, a correct restoration engine, or a useful work-duty big-block when the combination matches the job. The Mopar 361 B-series is the early low-deck big-block wedge that proved Chrysler’s new B-engine family could do more than make a one-year appearance. It had more staying power than the 350, less fame than the 383, and a broader working life than most people remember. That makes it useful, underrated, and easy to oversell if nobody checks the hardware.
Its strongest role is correctness and application fit. In the right early Mopar passenger car, Dodge D-500 context, Plymouth Commando or Sonoramic package, truck, or industrial application, the 361 can be the right engine because it belongs there. A complete, verified 361 with the right pieces deserves a better fate than being dismissed just because the pad doesn’t say 383.

Performance names like D-500, Super D-500, Commando, Golden Commando, and Sonoramic can matter, but only when the parts and vehicle story line up.
The build rule is restraint.
