Overview

The Mopar A-series poly small-block family came before the later LA small-block became the easy answer. It used polyspherical combustion chambers, wide-looking heads, an in-block camshaft, pushrods, shaft-mounted rocker gear, and early Mopar small-block architecture that doesn’t behave like later LA hardware just because the family tree eventually gets close.

That’s the part that burns people. The A-series poly and LA small-block are related in the broad Mopar story, but they aren’t the same engine wearing different valve covers. Poly heads, intake layout, exhaust fit, valvetrain pieces, front dress, bellhousing details, and application hardware can make parts shopping ugly when someone treats A-series poly and LA like twins.

This lineup also needs a hard boundary. These are the small-block A-series poly engines in this family group, not every Chrysler, Dodge, DeSoto, or Hemi-derived poly engine Mopar ever built. Mopar built enough engine families to make confusion a permanent hobby. A poly chamber doesn’t automatically make an engine part of this small-block group.

The smaller engines — 277, 301, 303, 313, and 326 — matter most for correct vehicles, period identity, regional applications, and owners who actually care what the car came with. Those are the broad family facts. They don’t make every A-series poly part universal, and they don’t turn a later LA 318 into the same engine. The poly heads, intake, exhaust, valvetrain, pistons, compression, front dress, crank flange, and application details can change the plan fast.


The 318 name causes the worst shortcut. A 318 A-series poly and an LA 318 share a famous displacement, not a full parts catalog. The family relationship is real. The bolt-on assumptions still need a leash.


The bellhousing and crank hardware deserve extra suspicion because early Mopar transmission fit can get ugly. Flywheels, converters, starters, crank flanges, and adapters don’t care that somebody said “small-block Mopar” with confidence.

Identification

A Mopar A-series poly small-block has a distinctive wide-head look for a small-block engine. The valve covers sit at an angle and give the engine a broader, heavier appearance than a later LA small-block. The heads are the giveaway. They don’t look like ordinary LA wedge heads, and they sure don’t look like big-block wedge or Hemi hardware once the shapes are clear.

The distributor sits at the rear, like later Mopar small-blocks, which is one reason casual observers get lazy. Rear distributor location alone doesn’t prove LA, A-series poly, displacement, year, market, or parts fit. It only proves someone found the back of the engine.

The intake manifold is another major clue. A-series poly intake layout is tied to the poly head design, and LA intakes don’t just swap on because both engines live under the broad small-block Mopar umbrella. Valve covers, intake shape, head width, exhaust pattern, and accessory details do more useful talking than paint color or air-cleaner decals.

The family also gets tangled with bigger Chrysler-family poly engines and Hemi-adjacent stories because Mopar made enough V8 variations to keep parts counters angry for generations. The A-series poly small-block should be identified by its own architecture, not by whatever old Mopar name somebody remembers from a swap meet.

Visual identification gets the engine into the A-series poly small-block family. It doesn’t prove displacement, original application, Canadian versus U.S. use, crankshaft, bellhousing setup, head casting, rebuild quality, or whether the parts on it were born together.

The 318 is the most common name, so it gets used as the lazy answer. Plenty of old Mopar conversations go straight to “poly 318” whether the engine is actually a 318 or not. The 277 is the early small-displacement member. It matters for correct period Plymouth-style applications and early-family history, but it shouldn’t be wished into something bigger because the heads look familiar. Small old Mopar iron doesn’t grow cubic inches because somebody got excited.

The 301 is the awkward early step-up. It gives more displacement than the 277, but it still lives in the old-family lane where exact year, application, and hardware matter. Treat it like a later catalog-friendly small-block and it’ll remind you why old Mopar projects collect dust under workbenches.

The 303 and 326 bring their own naming trouble because Mopar division, year, and market details can confuse people who only know the later LA small-block world. These engines need exact identification before anyone assumes parts, value, or interchange. “Looks like a poly” is not a parts-ordering strategy.

The 313 is one of the Canadian/export-flavored headaches. U.S.-market assumptions can make a real 313 look like an error, a typo, or somebody’s bad memory. That’s how parts get ordered for the engine someone wishes it was instead of the one sitting on the stand.
