Variants

The Mopar B 350 has a short variant map because Chrysler barely gave the thing time to unpack its tools. That doesn’t make the section empty. It means the 350 has to be sorted by what actually existed in 1958, not by later Mopar big-block fame dragged backward because somebody wants the price to sound better.

350 B-Block Factory Versions

The 350 arrived for 1958 as part of Chrysler Corporation’s new B-engine family. Manifolds, brackets, pulleys, linkage, air cleaner, induction parts, exhaust pieces, mounts, and transmission-related pieces can all be part of the reason the engine matters. A complete early package is worth more than a scattered pile of parts and excuses. Don’t tear apart a correct survivor just to chase a build that a later big-block handles better.

It makes less sense when the plan is serious performance with no concern for originality. Once correctness stops mattering, the 350 has to compete against the 383, 400, and 440. That’s a rough bench to sit on. Those engines usually offer more cubes, stronger aftermarket logic, easier parts planning, and a better payoff. Spending premium machine-shop money on the smallest early B engine only makes sense when the engine itself is part of the mission.

It can still work as a mild driver engine if expectations stay honest. Rebuild it clean. Keep the cam reasonable. Don’t over-carb it. Don’t make the compression, ignition, and gearing fight each other. In a cruiser, restored car, or lightly warmed early Mopar, the 350 can do honest work. In a heavy car with lazy gearing and a fantasy cam, it’ll remind everybody that cubic inches still matter.

If the original engine is missing, the vehicle doesn’t need correctness, and a better-supported Mopar big-block is available, a later 383, 400, or 440 may be the smarter answer. Family identity.
The 350 is a low-deck Mopar B-series wedge big-block. It isn’t a Chevrolet 350, a small-block Mopar, a 383, a 400, or an RB 413, 426 wedge, or 440. “Mopar big-block” starts the conversation. It doesn’t finish the parts order.

Bore and stroke proof.
Verify the actual engine before believing the name. The 350 B is the short-lived 1958 350-cubic-inch low-deck B engine with roughly a 4.06-inch bore and 3.38-inch stroke. Check the block, crank, pistons, casting marks, dates, and vehicle context before calling it rare, original, valuable, or compatible. Not every 1958 Mopar V8 claim points to this engine.

350 versus later B engines.
The 350 belongs to the same low-deck B-series world as the 361, 383, and 400, but that doesn’t make it a clone. Bore size, piston package, compression height, heads, intake fit, early hardware, and application details can change the plan. A 383 or 400 build recipe isn’t automatic permission to start ordering parts for a 350.

350 versus RB engines.
The 350 B isn’t an RB engine. The raised-deck RB family includes engines like the 413, 426 wedge, and 440. Deck height, intake fit, block dimensions, accessory layout, exhaust routing, mounts, and vehicle packaging need real verification before anybody starts mixing parts under the lazy “big-block Mopar” label.

Heads, pistons, and compression.
Treat the heads, pistons, chambers, compression ratio, cam timing, and intake as one package. Early wedge combinations don’t reward guessing. Valve clearance, compression, piston availability, and chamber behavior should be checked before machine work starts, not after the parts are already on the bench looking guilty.

Induction and exhaust.
Correct early induction can matter more than a bigger carburetor. Intake choice, carb size, linkage, air cleaner, exhaust manifolds, downpipes, and clearance all need to match the actual vehicle and build goal. A later hot-rod part that physically looks promising can still create fit, tune, or restoration-value problems.

Cooling, accessories, and early hardware.
Water-pump housing details, pulleys, brackets, belts, generator or alternator setup, throttle linkage, kickdown linkage, mounts, manifolds, and small early pieces should be treated like evidence. Don’t throw them away. On a 350 B, the complete original package can matter more than the bare block. Transmission and drivetrain fit.
Verify the exact year, engine, transmission, crank, converter or flywheel, starter location, bellhousing pattern, linkage, mounts, and driveshaft consequences before calling anything compatible. For a restoration-correct car, the 350’s value is in being the right early B engine with the right supporting pieces. The 350 B is important because it helped start Chrysler’s low-deck wedge big-block line, not because it became the Mopar engine everybody dreams about stuffing into a street bruiser. That’s the line to keep straight. It’s a real big-block Mopar, a real 1958 piece, and a real part of the B-engine beginning. The engine’s best argument is correctness. In the right 1958 Plymouth, Dodge, or DeSoto, especially with the right early hardware still attached, the 350 B deserves respect. It gives the car its proper place in the early wedge story, and that kind of originality has value. Pull it out just because later big-blocks are easier, and you may be trading a correct car for a louder mistake with better catalog support.

The engine’s worst argument is performance-per-dollar. Once originality stops mattering, the 350 has to stand beside 361s, 383s, 400s, 413s, and 440s. That isn’t friendly company for the smallest early B-block. Those later engines usually bring more displacement, easier parts planning, better builder familiarity, and fewer one-year headaches. The Mopar 350 B-series is a 1958-only low-deck big-block wedge, and that identity counts for more than the displacement number.
