The 301 Poly doesn’t need a giant variant swamp. It was a 1957 Plymouth A-series Poly with a simple factory split: the standard 2-barrel engine and the stronger 4-barrel / dual-exhaust Power Pak. The 301 lives in the early A-series Poly fog with the 277, 303, 313, and 318. They’re related, and that’s exactly why careless identification can turn stupid. Family resemblance doesn’t mean same displacement, same parts, same value, or same factory story.

After this many decades, a surviving 301 may have been rebuilt, swapped, re-carbureted, dressed with wrong parts, separated from its original car, or described by somebody whose entire research department was a trunk badge and hope. Old engines don’t get more honest just because the paint got older.

The 301 also has a short-run identity that attracts exaggeration. It isn’t common like the later 318 Poly, and it isn’t famous like the Fury dual-quad engine. That middle ground is where “rare” starts doing hard labor while the engine stands there quietly being a 301.

Check the real pieces before believing the story. Upgrade Limitations

The Mopar 301 poly looks friendlier than the 277 because the number is bigger and the family line is easier to recognize. That’s how it gets people. The 301 is still early Plymouth A-series poly iron, not a later LA 318, not a Magnum, not a Dodge Hemi, and not a universal Mopar small-block shortcut.
