Variants

Block casting, bore, suffix stamping, dates, heads, intake, carburetion, cam, pistons, crank, rods, compression, transmission context, and vehicle application all need to agree before the story gets expensive. If the claim leans on 396 identity, SS396 value, or high-performance hardware, the proof had better be stronger than the seller’s grin.
396 and 402 identity needs verification.
A 402 is not automatically a fake 396 story, and a 396 badge does not automatically prove a 396-cube engine. Chevrolet made the naming messy. The only sane answer is to check the block, bore, suffix, casting date, vehicle application, and documentation before arguing with the air cleaner.
Mark IV parts are not W-Series parts.
The 402 belongs to the Mark IV big-block family, not the earlier 348 / 409 W-Series. Heads, intakes, pistons, and combustion layout do not carry over just because both engines are old Chevrolet big blocks. A part can be big, heavy, Chevrolet, and wrong enough to make the whole plan trip over the engine stand.
Oval-port and rectangular-port heads need the right job.
A street 402 with oval-port heads can be a strong, friendly engine. Rectangular-port heads can belong on the right high-output package, but they’re not magic. Port size, chamber volume, compression, camshaft, gearing, exhaust, and rpm range all have to agree. Big ports on the wrong street build can make the engine feel softer while the owner brags louder.
Compression, pistons, and chambers decide the personality.
A 402 can be a mild cruiser, a strong street engine, or a serious high-compression bruiser depending on the parts. Piston dome, chamber size, deck height, gasket thickness, cam timing, ignition curve, and fuel all matter. Get that wrong and the engine won’t care what decal is on the air cleaner.
Induction needs proof and purpose.
A Holley carb, aluminum intake, dual-plane, high-rise, or factory-looking setup doesn’t prove a performance 402 by itself. Induction parts need to match the heads, cam, compression, rpm range, and car. Performance claims need the block, heads, cam, dates, stampings, and vehicle story to back them up. Shiny parts don’t get to testify alone.
Cooling, exhaust, and chassis fit can still bite.
Big blocks bring heat, weight, header clearance, steering clearance, starter location, mount fit, accessory alignment, radiator needs, and clutch-linkage or transmission concerns. “It fits a Chevy big block” isn’t the same as “it fits this car without starting a fight under the hood.”
Restoration-correct and driver-correct are different fights.
A driver 402 can use sensible substitutions if the engine runs well, fits the car, and the owner is honest about what it is. A restoration or high-value claim has to answer to dates, numbers, heads, induction, hardware, transmission, and vehicle application. A part can fit and still be wrong for the story.

That’s the reality. Keep the 396-badged 402s mechanically honest. Treat LS3 engines like LS3 engines. Verify L34, L78, and L89 aluminum-head package claims before paying performance money. But don’t let Chevrolet’s naming fog turn one displacement into another, and don’t let a badge do the job of a bore gauge.

Prove the version, verify the bore, and build it around the actual heads, cam, compression, and car.
