Gear Ratios

The A230 ratio story is simple enough to understand and important enough not to ignore. There are two common ratio sets: a 2.55 close-ratio set and a 3.08 wide-ratio set. Third gear is 1.00:1 direct in both, so neither version gives overdrive. Common Problems

The Mopar A230 3-speed is tougher and nicer than the lighter old Mopar 3-speed lane, but it’s still old medium-duty hardware with a hard ceiling. Most problems come from worn synchronizers, sloppy side linkage, tired bearings, leaking seals, wrong pilot or clutch fit, bad branch matching, and people hearing “A833-style bolt pattern” and getting stupid with expectations.

Another bad assumption is that the A230 is just another weak old Mopar 3-speed. That’s not fair either. The A230 is fully synchronized, medium-duty Mopar 3-speed hardware, stronger and nicer than the lighter A903-style lane. It can be a good street transmission when the car, engine, clutch, and expectations stay honest.

The body-branch split gets people in trouble. A-body units use the 23-1/4-inch, 26-spline mainshaft branch. B/E-body long-tail units use the 27-3/8-inch, 30-spline branch. Those aren’t tiny footnotes. They change the yoke, tailhousing, shifter, mount, speedometer-drive, and driveshaft answer.
