Intro

The small-block Chevy is common enough to make people lazy.

That is the trap. A Gen I small block is familiar, but 2-bolt mains, 4-bolt mains, rod-bolt size, 400-specific details, aftermarket heads, and mixed rebuild hardware still matter. “It’s just a small-block Chevy” is not a torque spec.

1 Two-bolt main block.

2 Four-bolt main block: 70 lb-ft inner bolts / 65 lb-ft outer bolts.

3 3/8 in. connecting rod bolts.

4 11/32 in. connecting rod bolts.

5 Stock adjustable rockers are set by lifter preload, not fixed bolt torque.

6 Cast-iron-head Gen I intake value. Aluminum intakes, Vortec-style heads, and aftermarket parts use their own instructions.


Aftermarket bolts, studs, rods, roller rockers, aluminum heads, intake manifolds, and replacement fasteners use the part maker’s number and lube instructions. Don’t use this chart to overrule the parts in your hand.

A range is not a game of horseshoes. If a matched set shows 60-70, don’t give one bolt 60, the next one 66, and the last one whatever your elbow liked. Pick one value in the range and use it consistently across the set unless the real procedure says certain fasteners get different numbers.

Notes

  • Gen I small-block Chevy does not mean every engine gets the same bottom-end number. Main-cap layout and rod-bolt size matter.
  • The 400 small block has its own cooling and head-gasket details. Do not treat every SBC head job like a 350 just because the bolts look familiar.
  • Stock rocker arms are adjusted by lifter preload. If you “torque” an adjustable valvetrain like a fixed pedestal, you are not adjusting it; you are guessing.
  • Vortec heads and many aftermarket intakes do not use the old 30 lb-ft intake habit. Follow the actual head and intake hardware.
  • Valve covers and timing covers use small fasteners. If the gasket squashes out, that was not “extra sealing.” That was you.

Common Mistakes

  • Using one generic small-block Chevy number across 2-bolt, 4-bolt, small-rod-bolt, and large-rod-bolt engines.
  • Using the 3/8 rod-bolt number on 11/32 rod bolts because “small-block Chevy” sounded specific enough.
  • Treating stock adjustable rockers like a simple torque-to-spec part instead of setting lifter preload.
  • Using old intake torque habits on Vortec, aluminum, or aftermarket intake setups.
  • Overtightening valve covers, timing covers, and oil pans until the gasket has no chance.
  • Reading a range and scattering random values across head bolts, mains, rods, or intake bolts like that was ever a plan.

Bottom Line

The Gen I small-block Chevy is common, useful, and very easy to take for granted.

That familiarity is exactly how people get sloppy.

Check the main-cap layout, check the rod bolts, match the heads and intake, keep matched fasteners consistent, and don’t let “SBC” do your thinking.
