Factory Drag, Super Stock & Pro Stock Legends

Before Pro Stock became a class, Detroit was already supplying the ammunition.

Super Stockers, lightweight factory specials, altered-wheelbase cars and match racers took the horsepower wars straight to the drag strip. Chevrolet, Ford, Chrysler, Plymouth, Dodge, Pontiac and AMC all wanted bragging rights, and they found plenty of racers willing to settle the argument.

Then Pro Stock arrived and made the job considerably more serious.

Naturally aspirated engines became highly developed pieces of machinery. Cylinder heads, intake manifolds, carburetors, gearing, chassis setup and a thousand details that looked insignificant to everybody except the guy who just lost by two hundredths suddenly mattered.

These are the racers who carried factory drag racing into Pro Stock and spent decades proving that doors and headlights didn’t make a race car ordinary.

Bottom Line

Funny Cars and Top Fuel got the fire and noise.

These guys had to find their speed the hard way.

No blower. No nitro. Just airflow, compression, camshaft, gearing, chassis setup and an unreasonable amount of attention paid to things most people couldn’t see.

Factory Super Stock started the fight. Pro Stock refined it until hundredths of a second could separate the clever from the merely fast.

That made it a very good place for engine guys.
